“impressive flow and plenty of confidence” Paper ft. Miraj (Prod. By Chris Wheeler)
This is a great track, in far more ways than one. The music has a vintage crackle to it that really suits the riff and the heavy, classic beat. The vibe set is one that fuses a little of the original sound of hip-hop and a little of the more modern sound of summer trance. All of which is great as a backing track, but often a song falls short when it comes to the artist’s performance or lyrics on top of such a hard hitting and memorable piece of music. Fortunately, that’s far from the case here.
As soon as the leading voice starts performing it’s everything you’d hope for in this kind of setting. The melody driven vocal is in keeping with the vibe, gentle yet skilful, and really well contrasted considering the rap vocal that soon follows. The rap vocal is harsh and energetic, and is presented with a really impressive flow and plenty of confidence. The flow is the key thing, though the sound of the voice is fairly unique and captivating in itself, that flow is something that fits perfectly alongside the rhythm of the music. It’s massively satisfying to listen to, and if you then zone in on the lyrics – everything just seems to fit really well within the theme and ambiance of the piece.
The melody of the song is nothing massively original, but in this context it doesn’t really need to be – the backing track has tonnes of freshness in amongst it’s peers right now, and the rap vocal is on point. Maybe an easy going r&b style melody is just what was needed to keep you focused on the right parts of the track. The whole thing has a great vibe to it, on the whole – it’s mellow yet energetic, somehow, so it calms you down and gears you up all at once; a ready for the weekend sort of track.
