Exposed Vocals just caught an exclusive with DeepBeat
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
DeepBeat: It started when I saw Crookers warming up for David Guetta show in Portugal, in 2008 at Kadoc  Disco. That day was the best day on my life and I felt things that I never have felt before. I remember that it was my first day on a disco and it was also my first day hanging out with my friends. That night was a little bit funny because I had to pretend that I was a french guy and I didn’t understand a little bit english. That day changed my life and I started to see my self doing the same as the Dj’s do nowadays, so I started to learn for myself In the beginning.
Then I started to search on web things that helped me to understand the Dj world or better saying, the music world!
I bought my first controller from Hercules and I also bought my first DAW in 2010, I think, and I started to do some mixes and copy and pasting on Fl Studio, only just to develop my skills and to be more comfortable with this “world”. After a few years, I looked to my equipment and remember to said “Enough, I need this and I need to make my dreams come true!”. I had a little conversations with my parents and I said that I wanted to be a Dj and a Producer and I wanted to learn everything and make everything to reach my goals. and they just said ” Ok, let’s go”.
Off course my schools didn’t let me start the Dj/producer course right after, I needed to finish my high school and and then I graduate my self in one of the bests schools in Portugal, the PRODJ, in Oporto. I started in 2015 and now I already finished my Producer course and I’m in the last step of the Dj course. I already make a lot of friendships with a lot of Dj’s,like Miss Blondie, Dj CruzFader, from Dynamic Duo, Mike Morales, from Signature Music and many more!
Basically what made me to become an artist was felt things that I never felt before in that night and  felt such an energy that makes us lose our minds and looking around and see nothing more than music and its energy, I think its a inexplicable thing!
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
DeepBeat: My artist name comes with a lot of thing together, since my visions, my music styles, my knowledge… many things it comes with everything combined!
After to turn into a professional Dj/Producer, my visions of the Electronic Music turned bigger than I thought, I started to be influenced with other music styles, like the House Music and today I appreciate the work of many House Music Dj’s, like Carlos Manaça, from Magna Recordings, like Carl Cox, Mi ke Morales from Signature Music, and many more.
The house music and the work of many House Music Producers made me understand differently the “soul” of House Music and I started to appreciate that types of track that have something unique an particularly different. I’m talking about that types of music that have a profound beat, it could be a kick, bassline, a clap, anything, and at the same time comes with and unique composition.
That allowed me to think about my artist name and realize that I like very much of the underground music combined with the happiness and love of the composition. And from that thing comes the name “Deep” from the profound and the love of the House music, and “Beat” from the composition and the happiness of the House Music.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
DeepBeat: The online music sharing is a paradox thing, because, first of all it’s great to share our content to reach many people as we can and receiving a lot of feedback from them and today we have the needed tools that we can use to reach that people easily. But is there one thing that prevents us to reach more people that we actually reach and it is the amount of audience that we have, because people and audience are words completely different. We have millions or billions of people searching on wed every second, and we have thousands or a million people that belongs on a audience. So, If we begin with a good track and we make everything right until we share to the world we will began to build our audience even if that track reach a million of people, our audience will be more less than a million. In my case, my audience is a little bit less than a thousand of people that really like and follow me and my work. I always share my music and I always show my music to my followers. As a growing Dj/Producer, I intend to show my work and my skills to the public in the first step and further I will be glad to sell my content and see my work being recognized. for that I know that I need to work harder to show my real talent in what I am better, making music!
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
DeepBeat: I already had my beginning and it was making a warm up for Miss Blondie on a private birthday, since that date I’m “fighting” to reach more and more people and see my work being recognized.
For the smaller or local bands I only can say that they have to believe harder in their jobs, and work harder to get their work recognized. For that they need to get out of home and bring their homework to the streets and get more and more people involved. After that they have to be sure that their work will continue to entertain more people and their fanbase will increase over and over again!
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
DeepBeat: Of curse yes! Everyone make his own mistakes, even Hardwell or Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike and they are the bests of the best! It’s very normal making mistakes during performance, it can happen all the time when we are trying to mix 2 tracks and one of them have 000.01 BPM than the other and it starts to run away and we have to hold it over and over again and we don’t notice that the BPM’s are different… or if will turn up the fader and we turn down the one which is up. Is very normal to make mistake during performances but the best way to handle that is to fix as soon as we can. The people will notice that anything is playing wrong during the show but if it will be fixed quickly they will be happy and they will continue to enjoy the party.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
DeepBeat: I’m not making tours to performance at some clubs yet! But it will a great honor to play in international club. I only travel to other countries on vacations and to increase my knowledge about that country. There was time when I travelled to Cape Verde in the Easter and I talk to a friend of mine that is living their and I said “I only go on travel if you get me a show for the Easter weekend!” and he said “Get the tickets and live it with me”. When I arrive their I went to my bedroom and I realize that I leaved my equipment at home and didn’t had that to play on the club and my friend get me a show for Saturdaynight!
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
DeepBeat: I have a particular and strange way to get inspiration…. I like the music if it have a unique style and if the elements of the music fits together in the all composition. It’s a little bit strange for me because not any track draw my attention but I have a lot of tracks that gives me inspiration to write my own like, “See line” from Dennis Cruz, “Question” from  Hot Lipps Inc., “Bigger than Prince” from Green Velvet, and many more!
My songwriting process in that moment is a little bit quick, because I’m on a step that I have to create music to have my content and I’m creating until I see I reach another step on my career. I go to a lot of samples and tools websites like Loopmasters, FutureLoops, Beatport, and many more to hear samples and vocals and beats that I like and I see that they are really good to add on my “production library”. Then I start to do what all Producers do, check the volumes, the pickings, Â equalizers, fix somethings, create new songs, testing, deleting, create new ones, fixing balances, a lot of things…
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
DeepBeat: No, I don’t have yet a band website. I think it’s better to develop my career but it will be a future bet. Now I’m using a lot of online platforms like Facebook, Soundcloud, Twitter, Mixcloud, Spinnin Records Talent Pool and Instagram and Youtube
Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?
DeepBeat: I have a few track that don’t surprise me at all because some albums have track that are a little bit weird and I forced to buy them. for example I have some tracks, like “Swinging Out”  from Simplex Sensus, “Summertime (feat. Ost & Kjex)”, from Jamie Jones, “SOTOM (Jimpster Remix)” from Noir & Sandy Rivera that don’t surprise me so much but I believe they are good track but for me they are a little bit out of the context
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
DeepBeat: First of all, Â I would be a little bit ingenuous if I said that It is all that matters. I never was and I am not a person o work for money or to receive large amounts of money with my work. I believe that my work have to be recognized and well paid for the importance and the amount of sails that my work represent. but answer the question, for a million of dollars I would spare as much as I can and I would invest on my career, maybe I would build an work studio for my work and I would spend a little for my needs.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
DeepBeat: My studio is small and I don’t have the physical tools on my studio. Sometimes I use online tools to help to advance on my progress. But I have what is need to produce and to mix. I produce with Logic Pro X and I mix with a Pioneer XDJ-RX.
In the future I will like to buy a new Daw, for example and maybe invest on a advanced MIDI Controller.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
DeepBeat: I use the promotion tools that the social media provides me! on facebook I promote my videos and my page to get more people interacting, for example. I think the best way to promote my career is to get more people interacting and giving their feedback of my work, and is a thing that needs to be persistent because if I stopped to promote my work, the people will stop to follow my work.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
DeepBeat: With no doubt my biggest dreams is to preform with Crookers, and it could be side by side or just a warm up. He is one of my favorite Dj and he inspire me a lot on my career. I don’t know why I put him in the first place but the way he do his things and how he shows to the world, for me, is phenomenal.
My favorite place to perform I think it will be in a huge festival in main stage, I’m not saying Tomorrowland or Ultra Festival, I’m saying in a huge festival with a lot of artists and many more… I will be very grateful if I can evolve my career and have my name in many events and festivals.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
DeepBeat: I admit that now I will start my second year on the university and I will be very busy during the class period and the production will be less but I will try to produce as many as I can and continue to sending out my music and continue to show my work to my audience.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
DeepBeat: I don’t see myself without music anymore! I make the music my life because I love what I do and I love to search new ways to make better music and to produce more and more! But if won’t had this I think I will be working on tourism at full time. I already conclude the high school on tourism and now I’m on the second year in the university on Tourism, so basically I think I would being working on tourism if I won’t have the music.
Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?
DeepBeat: Yes of curse! It was on Miss Blondie birthday and she made a private party and she invited me to perform at the club after dinner and she invited me two days before the birthday and I only had a few tracks for the Dj classes and I needed to buy a lot of music for that day, and I went to Beatport and i searched every House Music style, Deep House, Chill house… and I bough a lot of music just for that date, and then I went to the Itunes Store and I bough also an album with 60 music or something… I was very nervous about that because I had to, mentally prepare myself, for the day because I  had never played in a club and in that day I would play on club in the next 48 hours, so, I was very nervous and I also called to my girlfriend  to asked her if she wanted to hear my tracks to the day and if I needed to buy more music… I was very nervous. Sincerely, I think I had my head empty or if I was thinking about something it was about how it would be in the day and how what could happen.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
DeepBeat: In my daily life I never stop for one moment. I always doing something or checking news plugins, or checking my pages updates or washing the car or hiring music or playing a little with the decks or studying or something like that. So, I never stop but I have a lot of time to do my things but now with the beginning of the second year of the university I need to organize myself and make the things more carefully and split the time to make my music and to study and do my homework. It will be a challenge for me but I think it will be possible to do and I will do the things at the same time.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in the next year or so?
DeepBeat: I can promise one thing, I will know more about music than I know now, I will make better music than I do now and maybe who knows I will work with various artists, producing music. I will improve my skills everyday and I know that in the next year I will be more capable to manage my career and maybe I will be present in some major events.
