Exposed Vocals sits down with David King for an exclusive interview
Exposed Vocals: How did you hear about Exposed Vocals? What made you decide to sign up?
David King: I heard about Exposed Vocals on Twitter, and I thought it was really cool how they give opportunities to put yourself out there as an artist.
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
David King: I grew up in the Texas Panhandle, in a really small country town. Population maybe 14,000. It was really hard for me to find out who I wanted to be growing up in a small town, were everyone was kind of taught to just graduate High School, then go to college and get a degree, but I knew that wasn’t something that I wanted to do. It took me moving to Dallas, and really isolating myself from all of my hometown friends to figure myself out. Dallas is where I discovered a passion for music, and it kind of just started out as me listening to a lot of different types of music and just feeling the emotions the artists, that I just knew I wanted to work with as my career.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
David King: David King Holguin is the name I was given at birth. I was named after my uncle David that passed away before I was born, and I am also named after King David in the bible. I use my middle name instead of my last name, because it’s not always an easy name to pronounce.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
David King: I love online music sharing! It just gives you a chance to share your feelings basically. You meet so many people online from sharing music that you cant help but to become a fan of their work. I share my music for free so that I can get raw feed back from people all over the world. Online music sharing helps artists grow and perfect their art.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
David King: I myself am a start-up artist right now, so I can use the advice. All I would say is if you know this is something you want you will do anything to get there. I’m not giving up anytime soon.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
David King: ALL THE TIME. After I make a mistake I either try to play it off as humorous, or if the situation isn’t too bad then, ill quickly gather myself and channel all of my emotions.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
David King: I haven’t toured yet, but I wouldn’t be opposed to it.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
David King: My process is to make a beat, and the beat is usually shows the mood I was in when I made the song, so the lyrics either come from my personal experiences, or a story a friend told me… English was my favorite subject in High School, so sometimes I just write about a random plot and those songs are usually the best ones.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
David King: I’m a solo artist at the moment, and I use SoundCloud to post all of my work. Then immediately after posting, I share it to Twitter, Facebook, Instargram, Tumblr. And then I get no sleep that night, cause I’m just wanting to read all of the feedback people are giving to me.
Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?
David King: I have a few good, but embarrassing songs on my mp3. Culture Club – I’ll Tumble For You is defiantly is one of them. Britney Spears – Oops I Did It Again, and NSYNC – I Want You Back. I’m positive that there’s more!
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
David King: I would spend my money on studio equipment, softwares, mics. I would probably start College with that year off, get an Audio Engineering degree. Something that will benefit me and my music.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
David King: I plan on getting some software for my at home studio… Right now im just doing all of my records on my laptop, with a basic microphone that was only about 30 bucks.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
David King: I use all social media outlets to promote my music, SoundCloud.com/davidkingholguin that was an easy plug, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter. They all really help to draw attention to your music. I would say Twitter has been the best source of self promotion for me so far.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
David King: Ariana Grande, mostly because I would want the chance to meet her. Madison Square Garden is defiantly where we would preform! Lets be completely honest. When I moved to Dallas I got a little depressed and around that time I heard this song called The Way and I thought it was Mariah Carey like everyone else did, but it was Ariana. Long story short I bought her album Yours Truly, and had it with me everywhere I went for about 6 months I never quit listening to it, and it brought me out of my depression. The power of music is so crazy!
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
David King: I don’t have anything big planed right now. I’m new at all of this, and just trying to perfect my sound before I move onto anything real big. But u can expect a lot of Covers coming!
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
David King: I know this sounds weird, but I can’t say what I would be doing. Working on music is just something I like doing, and I’m just waiting for the right moment to make it my full-time job. Right now I am working at a café in Texas and recording covers, writing songs, making beats with my spare time.
Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?
David King: Believe it or not, 3LW was the first album I ever bought when I was about 6 years old. I was REAL excited! I remember buying a Walkman at the same time I got the cd, and I though I was the coolest kid at school listening to my Walkman during recess just jamming out on the swings.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
David King: I try to make sure I’m not just stuck in my little studio all day just recording. Being around my family and keeping up with their lives is something that’s important to me as well. Taking a break from a project is something that I think makes me a better artist. It gives you time to rest on it, come back with a fresh mind and just nail it!
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
David King: I would like to collaborate with different artist in 2016. Try new genres of music. Defiantly more covers! Keep checking out my SoundCloud page to see what im up to. I try to post music once a week or more. Find me on social media @davidkingholguin and on twitter @davidkholguin. Also thank you so much Exposed Vocals for all that you do!
