Exposed Vocals just sat down with songwriter Leigh Broadway for an exclusive interview
Exposed Vocals: What inspired you to begin writing original songs?
Leigh: I was inspired to write my own songs as a way of expressing my unique life experiences.
Exposed Vocals: Why do you feel it is important for a musical artist to write their own songs?
Leigh: I feel it is of critical importance to develop your own “voice” and express your individuality through original material. In an industry saturated with singer/songwriters writing your own songs will help you to stand out from the crowd.
Exposed Vocals: Who were some of your early musical influences?
Leigh: I am a child of the 70s’ and a few of my early musical influences were Karen Carpenter, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon. Karen Carpenter had one of the most hauntingly beautiful voices of all time. Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon are gifted lyricists and painted strong visuals with their lyrics. We are still humming to the melody of Carly Simon’s song “You’re So Vain”.
Exposed Vocals: Who are your favorite contemporary singer/songwriters?
Leigh: Chris Tomlin a Contemporary Christian Artist is one of my favorite singer/songwriters. I also enjoy the music of the talented Kirk Franklin!
Exposed Vocals: What are a few tips you would give to an aspiring singer/songwriter to help develop their songwriting skills?
Leigh: First of all, I would suggest taking a class in songwriting or musical composition at a local Community College or a songwriting workshop in your area. This will help you to learn the basic components and structure of a good song. Secondly, if you are a strong lyricist and you don’t play an instrument, combine your talents with a friend who plays guitar or piano. They may be able to take your lyrics and compose a great melody for your original song.
Exposed Vocals: Any other suggestions for aspiring singer/songwriters?
Leigh: Yes, the music business is a business! It is very important to study and learn the business aspects of the music industry. You must learn how to protect your intellectual property, prepare a good, strong business plan for your career, and gain a basic understanding of Performance Rights Organizations such as BMI, ASCAP and CCLI. I am a member of ASCAP and CCLI under my Holding Company Music Under The Son.
Exposed Vocals: What original projects are in your future?
Leigh: I wrote a song a few years ago, and the title is “Called To Be A Witness”. I was inspired by a scripture in the Bible from the book of Acts in Chapter 20 vs. 24. This passage in the Bible tells us that our greatest purpose in life as Christians is to share the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. My original composition is a funky, upbeat, contemporary gospel melody. I am in the process of seeking a Music Producer for this song.
