Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
I grew up in London with 2 older brothers, one who was obsessed with Pop and the other with Greek music. i found an old mic when I was a kid and would plug it in to this ancient record player and sing along to Elvis, Cat Stevens and these greek songs…I always used to act as a child and I think that’s where the performance side comes in. I used to always pretend I was sick, even putting soup in my mouth and pretending to puke so I didn’t have to go to school..
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Target people that like similar stuff. Invest in yourself, financially you have to spend a bit to get yourself heard – no one is going to invest in you unless you invest in yourself first. Submit music to BBC uploader – worked for me! And play at Sofar sounds – they are awesome intimate gigs in really cool venues and peoples living room and they have created something very special.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
All the time, i’m human, not a robot, sometimes I make up words, sometimes i go a little off key If I can’t hear a certain instrument clearly. It happens, It’s raw and part of the charm i guess…i used to beat myself up a lot but i’m trying to be nice to myself now..
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
I do a lot of ITB work so I would love to get a neumann u87mic next and some nice outboard compressors. I have my eye on a nice Avalon Vacuum Tube…
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Different things work for different songs, I’ve tried Digital PR companies, some great – some absolute shit! A good radio plugger is a good idea, if it’s in your budget and you feel the song has radio potential.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
David Bowie, cos he’s the man! or was…IS the man, he music will live on forever!
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
I think I would either do comedy acting or be a therapist! People always come to me with their problems…
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in the next year or so?
I’ll hopefully be releasing my second single in the Summer and also keep an eye on my youtube channel www.youtube.com/adamprinceking for some fun videos and covers.
