Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
JoeeBilli:
I grew up in my early years in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, move to Stanford VA and attended high school there then moved to CALIFORNIA. Where I’ve been here for over 10 years. Ive always had a passion for music, I started as just a music producer, producing for artist that were independent and major, I met a lot of dope artist even worked with legends such as Tank and Mac Miller I produced (Wedding) of his project “Faces”. After working with many artist, I decided I had the ability and talent to record myself and as a producer I wouldn’t need anyone to give me beats, I could just do it myself. I became an official artist when I dropped my album “The Billi Show” world wide in 2019.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
JoeeBilli:
Be great at what you do, learn from others, find mentors, this doesn’t have to be someone older, just someone who you look up to musically or who is better in an area you wish to perfect for your own musical goals. Also you need a budget, to get your stuff mixed and mastered correctly, also for promo and release. You don’t need a million dollars but you need something, you can work 3 jobs if you have to, just put money into your work and releases.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
JoeeBilli
Hell yeah, I’ve forgot parts of my songs or was super nervous before hitting stages, or worse in my head that no one will like my songs. Just gotta stop overthinking and just act as if its just you doing what you love, people or either gonna accept it or not, and thats ok in this big world full of opinions. Also when you mess up on stage, just keep going and find where you’re at in the song and don’t panic, keep preforming.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
JoeeBilli:
Yes I have toured, I went on a 17 state tour, every city showed me so much love, it was called the ground up tour featuring Marty Grimes and Shaq&Living. My favorite city was New Mexico, the ladies loved me there, was a memorable night.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
JoeeBilli:
Yup, I have a Neumann 103 mic, industry standard if you don’t have a million dollar studio, I plan on upgrading my interface to a apogee thunder bolt system. Also looking to upgrade my Mac Book pro to a newer version. Perks of being a current UCLA student I get them at a good price point.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
JoeeBilli:
Its hard to say with social media charging for outreach now, unless you make reel and go viral, its gonna take money. For me, I just try to release hot music, with my following if I drop something hot, Ill go up. I have a lot of A&Rs and music executives that follow me, im sure they will reach out. Thats my insight, also i have a small circle of people that really like my music, I try to focus on them. If i can get 20 people to a show at $20 a ticket thats 400 a night if I had a show, not bad if I must say so myself.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
JoeeBilli:
I like Nav as a music artist, would love to perform with him, I want to go overseas, maybe Europe and sell out a show there. I want to get out of the states and see what I can do in that market. If I can get people overseas rocking with my music, its trajectory would eventually come back t the state I’m in.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
JoeeBilli:
Im working on my final album, “Stuck To The Plan” STTP, Im producing it with help from others but 90% is produced by me, The meaning is regarding how I went through a series of difficulties, when cover hit, and music and shows were on a stand still, my way of making money was stopped as a musician, jobs weren’t hiring due to the pandemic and safety concerns, I lost my 7 year relationship, and was practically homeless. I went back to school, got my high school diploma, enrolled in Santa Monica College, graduated with honors and two degrees one in behavior science and sociology, with my high GPA I got into the number university in the country UCLA and I’m expected to graduate in 2023 with my BA and I plan on going to graduate school to get my masters in Psychology. At the same time when I lost everything, I got a placement that changed my career with Mac Miller, of his album faces I produced “Wedding”. I got paid and make royalties for the rest of my life with this song. I also created new music and have about 13 songs for my final album before I focus on a career outside of music with my degrees.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
JoeeBilli: Id be a school psychologist for kids kindergarten through high school
