Exposed Vocals just caught an exclusive interview with Sharr Singh
OUR FIRST URBAN PUNJABI FEMALE ARTIST FROM HOLLAND? That’s right, her name is Sharr Singh and some of you might heard from her before. We can tell you a standard story about the fact that singing was always her passion etc., which is obvious true, but we rather tell u what u can expect from her. Her genre is urban Punjabi and she loves to make music that has been influenced from around the globe. Although she is very proud of her roots and listens to Punjabi music, she has a various taste when it comes to music. You might not expect this from this young Punjabi lady, but she listens to Armenian and Albanese music but can also be in the mood for trap, hip-hop and cloud- rap.
She officially started her career in June 2017, but has released a track in 2014, which was ‘’Pull Ja’’ and reached 25K views. Although she wasn’t satisfied with the song, it was more an opportunity that she got while she was studying and did it for fun. Surprisingly she got a few bookings in the UK back then but couldn’t go because of her study. Although it was very tempting to accept these bookings, she had her priorities straight and decided to decline those because of her deadlines of her study. It was hard to combine it with her study and she promised herself she would continue her career on a professional level as soon as she graduated. Three years later she graduated in the summer of ‘16 and got her Bachelor of Business Administration(BBA). She immediately got busy with her music and had to find the right people to work with because she had no connections whatsoever. After a long search of trying to find the right (and most important for her: loyal) people, she found them in December 2016. Shortly after that, she recorded two songs and decided that she wanted to shoot the videoclips internationally in a sunny place. After a talk with her team she booked tickets to Spain for April 2017 and shot both videoclips in 8 days.
Now that she officially started her career in june 2017, she can’t complain about how it’s going. Her first track around 145.000 views within a couple months which she achieved without a record label or connections. Shortly after that she release her 2nd single ‘’Just for You’’ and received over a 155.00 views. Recently her last track ‘’Knock You Down’’ came out which has been received good so far and hig the 55K in a couple weeks.
Her streams on Spotify are close to 70.000 plays and people are slowly acknowledging her work.
We can expect much more of this young lady!
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
I grew up in the Netherlands in a small city next to Amsterdam. I always wanted to sing but I had my priorities straight.
My study was always very important for me and I decided to go for my career after I graduated BBA. I always worked at a law firm when I was a student and I liked it for a while but I was getting bored. I was feeling like I didn’t belong there and had creative ideas but couldn’t work the ideas out because they were music related. It would be kinda weird if I handed my ideas over to them right?! *laughs* . It was very risky for me to take this decision, but I thought I’m in my 20’s now and what could be a better time than this.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
I was always looking for gigs online and through social media. I would e-mail them or contact them by phone. I think that the communication is very important and be pro- active when you contact the agents of the events. You can’t think that once a song is out, you can lean back and the events will search for you. You have to be pro active as well.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Yes I did in 2017 when I performed in Leicester. There wasn’t a soundcheck because I arrived the night before where I had a club event in Birmingham. The next morning I immediately had to get to Leicester so there wasn’t any time left. I didn’t know how my voice would sound like and the mic volume was going up and down where my voice was going up and down as well. I didn’t have control over the sound and I went off a few times on the higher tones. I couldn’t do more than performing at my best and act like nothing went wrong. I performed in front of 3000 people and I was a little bit scared that it would go online, so I posted the video first and I didn’t get negative comments.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
I’m not touring yet but in the summer there are a lot of events in the weekends in UK, so I probably am going back and forth, but I can’t call that an official tour. Of course I hope to be on tour when my music is more out there and it’s being acknowledged more.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
I’m constant working on new sounds where I love to take risks in my genre. I’m currently working with one producer ‘’Jumé’’ who is based in the Hague. I don’t know which software or hardware he is using. But at home I also have a mini studio which I work in for small vocals that I have to send in sometimes. At home I work with a SE electronics 2200a II microphone and have a focusrite scarlett 2i2 USB interface.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
For me it’s best to make use of my supporters/followers on my social platforms right now, but you also have to push it through the right channels. My management arranges the advertisement and has the right contacts to arrange that.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
If I could it would probably be with Lady Gaga because her energy is something you can feel when u look at her performances. She’s great at combining her vocals with her performances and knows how to hype up the crowd or entertain them in different ways.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
My next upcoming track is a whole different side of me and could be described as a bit ‘’darker’’. The lyrics have a meaning which are based on my current situation and about how I feel stepping into this industry. I’m always bettering my work not only with the music but also the video productions, because I always write the storylines myself. If you look at my work the productions vary every time and this time it’s again another concept. That’s all I can say right now.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
I think I would probably start my own business eventually because I’m a person who comes up with new ideas and implements it. I always want to take action right after something pops up on my head and I think that makes me more of a leader.
I think I would I pursue my career further at the law firm at first but would be working on projects in the showbusiness.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in the next year or so?
I think they could expect releases which they are not used to hear from me. I’m currently busy with a few projects which I would love to share but unfortunately being open about my projects in this industry wouldn’t be the smartest thing to do. I also hope that I will start touring in at least 3 countries which we already have in mind.
Exposed Vocals: Any Shout-outs?
A big shout out to my whole team who worked with me on Knock You Down and a big shout out to the supporters who’ve been following my journey for the beginning.
