Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Tippy Morgan: I was born in LA but grew up in Memphis, TN. At some point in high school I randomly lived on a farm with 2 horses and 2 ostriches but NONE of the standard farm animals. I’ve always known I wanted to be an artist for as long as I can remember. I grew up performing in school musicals and the church choir. My first school musical role was as Matilda, The Nerd and I used my own nerd clothing as costuming.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Tippy Morgan: The name happened pretty organically. Tippy is my mother’s nickname in our family and Morgan is my middle name and also my grandfather’s name. I really love the name Tippy because it’s rare and reminds me of Tippi Hedren and her representation of old Hollywood glamour. But it’s funny when I’m with my family and someone calls out Tippy, and my mother and I both reply at the same time.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Tippy Morgan: I think music sharing has its pros and cons just like anything else. I offered my last EP for free download in exchange for signing up for my email list. I’ll probably do the same for my next EP. It’s just an easier way to get your music out to people when you’re unknown.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Tippy Morgan: I’m not sure about getting airplay, but just in terms of trying to break through in general, I think it’s beneficial to be as self-contained as possible. I write, compose, produce, and engineer all of my own music. I own my publishing. I even designed my album artwork. Right away I’m positioning myself to offer many different things to the industry while developing different revenue streams and multiple avenues for success. I’d advise anyone else to do as much of that as possible. Or just be filthy rich. That seems to work, too.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Tippy Morgan: Of course, everyone makes mistakes. I’m a perfectionist, so I can be pretty self-critical. But I think it’s important to always remember that performing is fun and as long as we enjoy it and the audience is enjoying it, everything will be fine. If I make a mistake, I just keep going. And if all else fails, just do a bunch of aggressive pelvic thrusts. That’ll distract ‘em!
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
Tippy Morgan: I haven’t started touring yet, but I’m working on making it happen. Fingers crossed!
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Tippy Morgan: Inspiration can come from anywhere. I’ve gotten a lot of inspiration from relationship ups and downs. I have a notepad on my phone where I write down various ideas and concepts. I record random melodies and just go from there. I usually have a song at least partially written before getting in the studio and working on production.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
Tippy Morgan: My website is www.tippymorgan.com. I also use Soundcloud and YouTube, along with various social media like Twitter and Instagram.
Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?
Tippy Morgan: Good question! I’m not embarrassed by any music I listen to because where’s the fun in that?? I am a hardcore Kpop (Korean pop) fan, though. Lots of SNSD, Big Bang, EXO, HyunA, 2NE1, Orange Caramel, etc on my ipod.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?Â
Tippy Morgan: First I would use $99.99 to buy the largest pokecoin pack in Pokemon Go. Next I would use another $99.99 to buy the largest gem pack in Clash Royale (because I clearly have a problem). THEN I would invest all the rest in my music career!
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
Tippy Morgan: I currently work out of my home studio. My main program is Logic X Pro with lots of plugins.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Tippy Morgan: I’ve mostly used social media but I plan to broaden my scope for the next project.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?Â
Tippy Morgan: Anywhere, right? I’d love to perform in space with literally anyone. If I can perform on some exoplanet with MJ, even better. That would be ridiculous! I’d also love to record or perform a duet with Kpop artist Junsu/Xia because I think our voices would blend so well together.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Tippy Morgan: Yes! I’m currently working on another EP and also beginning to make hip hop beats for rappers. That’s been a lot of fun.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?Â
Tippy Morgan: Before I started focusing on music, I did the whole acting grind in LA. So I’d probably be doing that- constantly auditioning and whatnot. Or I’d be writing fantasy fiction, which I already do as a hobby anyway.
Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?Â
Tippy Morgan: I don’t remember buying my first album, but the first one I can remember listening to is Madonna “The Immaculate Collection.†It belonged to my mother, and I took it from her, and I still have it.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
Tippy Morgan: Horribly?? Lol, jk. I do the best I can. I used to work political campaigns in between music projects but that became too difficult to juggle. Now I’m singularly focused.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in the next year or so?Â
Tippy Morgan: Fans should definitely look forward to another EP, videos, live performances, and more!!
