Exposed Vocals Interviews “Those Two People”
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Mia: I grew up in the whole east coast, and moved around quite a bit. The happiest times I could remember was when I was jamming with friends or writing songs. I began to fill notebooks and eventually met Sam who shared my love for music, especially the ukulele.
Sam: I grew up in Concord New Hampshire, I absolutely love music. I never listened to what was considered normal though. On my mp3 player I always had something quirky, like Jonathan Coulton, or video game music. Playing Zelda inspired me to get an Ocarina, once I learned that I picked up the Ukulele and it was downhill from there!
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Mia: “Those Two People” is rather self explanatory, but it seemed to fit us quite well. It displays the simplicity and charm that our music provides.
Sam: Mia says it well, the name just fits our style.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Mia: I think it’s great. Our music is available for free simply because it’s the entire reason we do it at all, to share it. We love the reactions people get and simply sharing the love.
Sam: We work really hard on our music and want to share it with as many people as possible. If you want to tip us feel free to buy our music, but the best way to support us is by listening!
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Mia: We are still quite new and up and coming, so I’m not sure.
Sam: Advertise as much as possible, play open mics, make social media accounts. We’re pretty small and pretty fresh but I’d say this advice has helped us so far.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Mia: I have, and the best thing to do is to just roll with it and not let your face show it.
Sam: All the time, just grin and keep going. It’s not a big deal, most times people won’t notice. Just laugh it off and people with laugh with you. Keep your stage presence strong!
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
Mia: Not yet, but who knows what the future holds.
Sam: We haven’t done a tour yet, maybe something unofficial could hit the NH seacoast this summer!
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Mia: inspiration strikes at the strangest moments. I keep a note app on my phone and write down lyrics or a subject for a new song.
Sam: I also use the notes App in my phone to write down idea on the go. When I write music often times I will have the music for the song and ideas. Sometimes I’ll sit with a first verse or chorus and a new tune for months. Then when inspiration hits the rest unfolds.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
Mia: We currently have a Facebook, Instagram, and a twitter. We share our music on Spotify for free as well as YouTube, iTunes, Google play music etc..
Sam: What she said, Look up “Those Two People” on all your favorite social media platforms and follow us!
Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?
Mia: hips don’t lie by Shakira… secretly my jam. Also an unhealthy amount of talking heads.
Sam: The Loophole by Garfunkel and Oates, or some bad EDM mixes
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
Mia: I would invest in a home and rent it out. Then I would take the rest of the money and travel the world.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
Mia: not yet, but love adding new instruments.
Sam: Our studio right now is a couple Mics and a living room. We have a whole lot of instruments though! So far this is working for us, it fits our music style quite well too.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Mia: the Internet is a great invention, and has endless possibilities when it comes to getting yourself out there.
Sam: There so so many digital distribution options, this has certainly helped. It’s working well for us so far.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
Mia: Jamming out with Ringo Starr in the streets of Paris would be pretty rad.
Sam: I would love to do a gig with Jonathan Coulton or Walk Off The Earth. They are my top 2 inspiring musicians and it would be an honor.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Mia: our next album, we will be working on it in the summer 2016.
Sam: We have a few songs that didn’t make it onto our first album because of time constraints, so look for those sometime towards the end of this year!
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Mia: working on my paintings and getting into art galleries.
Sam: I’m a big nerd, I do IT as my day job. I’m a big gamer and have done some coding and model design in the past. If I had more free time I’d be putting a game together.
Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?
Mia: I don’t remember my first album…
Sam: I think the first music I bought was to specifically support that artist. Most people will download things for free if they can, so why not make it available so it comes directly from your platforms.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
Mia: time management is important. I typically always keep an intrument within reach if inspiration strikes.
Sam: I work full time 8-5 Monday through Friday. Finding time has been difficult for me with so many responsibilities. Putting time to make music into my schedule really helps.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
Mia: another fun upbeat album, music videos, and more!
Sam: Those Two People being creative
