Exposed Vocals Interviews Shawn 34
Exposed Vocals: How did you hear about Exposed Vocals? What made you
decide to sign up?
Shawn 34: 1) I saw an interview on good ol’ twitter. 2) It
sounded like a good idea at the time.
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What
made you decide to become an artist?
Shawn 34: I came from the woods of Shermansdale, PA. You had to
make a lot of noise back there to get noticed. For as long as I can
remember, I’ve wanted to entertain. Whether it was singing Rockwell
into my little He-Man Boombox, or putting kittens in the toilet, it
seemed attention is what I craved.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your
inspiration behind it?
Shawn 34: It’s part of a much larger story. A legend, at this
point. I also liked how the dude from 7 Seconds was called Kevin
Seconds, and we were Valve 34. So…
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you
ever give your music away for free? Why?
Shawn 34: It’s unavoidable by now. It is rather nice to be paid
for your work, but art belongs to no one and has no price. So,
conflicted then, is how I feel. That said, my music is always free.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any
smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some
tips?
Shawn 34: I would say just concentrate on making the music that
you love. The rest will be inevitable. Of course, that laid back
approach never got me far. …Yeah, do the opposite. Sell out at the
FIRST and EVERY opportunity! And most importantly – change your music
to sound less like the things you’re insecure about, and more like the
stuff you hear on the radio. Do kids listen to radios?
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do
you handle that?
Shawn 34: I am one big mistake! Seriously though, much is born
in the moment. Let it live!
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that
you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
Shawn 34: Nah, I’m a homeboy.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration?
What is your usual songwriting process?
Shawn 34: From anything that permeates the blood-brain barrier! I
usually just improvise, record it, improvise along, record it, repeat.
I don’t have an UNDO button anymore, so most likely when you hear me
on a recording, it’s literally the second or third time I’ve even
heard it since it came to be. So, I’ll just go with all that.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do
you use to share your music?
Shawn 34: Yeah, bitch! www.blackfaceted.weebly.com There’s a lot
of my stuff and other great 2-Liter Records music at
soundcloud.com/john-nayduch as well.
Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might
find on your mp3 player?
Shawn 34: Oh God, lot’s of Cosby. It’s just not the same effect
when it randomly pops up nowadays. It’s like, sorry ‘Cos, I just can’t
care about Fat Albert’s hernia right now.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year
off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
Shawn 34: I’d like to say most of it wouldn’t be for pot, but…
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
Shawn 34: I just want an UNDO button! Really, I believe you can
make magic on or with anything. Just be true to what you enjoy. If you
don’t enjoy it, how can you expect anyone else to? If you like it,
make it. Let others worry about their opinion. Just enjoy it.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works
best for you?
Shawn 34: Coincidence is king.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists
(Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
Shawn 34: Hmmm. I wouldn’t mind sharing the stage with Insane
Clown Posse and Sheryl Crow at Red Rocks! A boy can dream…
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you
want to talk about?
Shawn 34: I just made an new EP with dfh called ‘THE MONTY HALL
PARADOX’ that is up on soundcloud.com/john-nayduch – and an exclusive
album for Little Big Planet with Outback Shithouse called ‘The Return
Of the Great Satan’. As far as the future, we’ll see. I don’t
necessarily believe in the concept of time.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Shawn 34: I couldn’t even imagine.
Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it?
What was going through your head?
Shawn 34: I was so pumped! I always listened to my brother’s
music, so when I finally got to get one of my own, I was hot shit! It
was probably Weird Al or John Cougar Mellencamp.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities
while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
Shawn 34: Poorly.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2015?
Shawn 34: I have big things in store! Stay tuned!
