Exposed Vocals Interviews Rotativos
The Rotativos band was created in 2012 by Kau Herdy and Luiz Felipe Hazas, in order to experiment new sounds and different sensations, with no restrictions or labeling genres.
True to its name, the initial idea was to promote the rotation of musicians until they reached the perfect formation..
After several formations, the ideal consistency has Kau Herdy on vocals, Luiz Felipe Hazas on guitar, Carol Chaves on guitar, Pedro Valente on bass and Billy Albuquerque on drums.
The band spent the second half of 2014 recording their CD entitles “Mudança”, produced by Pedro Garcia and mastered by Chris Hanzsek where each track depicts a different story.
Recently, they played on the best-known rock radio of Rio de Janeiro and they just won their place in the F.B.I. (Festival of Independent Bands), passed by 147 bands. Kau Herdy won the best singer of the night award and the best vocalist of the whole festival.
Exposed Vocals: How did you hear about Exposed Vocals? What made you decide to sign up?
Rotativos: We heard about Exposed Vocals from our producer. We are always looking for new things, new bands and what they are up to and EV is the perfect website to show what´s happening in the alternative/independent music
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Rotativos: We all grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We believe that this thing of becoming an artist comes in blood. Our lead singer started to perform to her family when she was 5, for instance…One of our guitar players, Luiz, learn how to play guitar by himself, as our bassist. We mean, where does that come from? This is the first step to this huge decision in life. After you realize your passion, that´s when you start all the work and process to be capable of being a professional.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Rotativos: Our name in portuguese means something that is always rotating. When we first created the band, we didn´t wanted to depend on anyone, so the members could change til we find the perfect group. So far, we´ve been learning a lot with every member who has joined us. There is always a rotativity. Just like our lives. We expect to enjoy and learn as long as we can. So far we had 4 drummers and 2 bassist.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Rotativos: This is the new way to listen to music now. The new generation´s way. Everything is moving so fast and we are having a lot of good and new artists showing up…People don’t want to lose time buying cds…Actually, we think that people, especially the young ones, don’t have the patience to even listen to a full album. And we don´t blame them. It´s just the way it is now. Now, with the touch of our fingers we can listen to any music we want from any part of the world. That´s awsome. The challenge is to find out how to be heard and captivate this generation. We do give our music away for free! As an independent band, the most important thing is to be heard before getting the benefits of it. Otherwise, another band will do it and you lose the chance to be heard.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Rotativos: First of all, try to have a serious material like recording an album ou some tracks. And then try to apply to gigs you think it´s worthy, it´s important to show that you and your band exist. Always make contacts and never give up. It´s a long and hard way.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Rotativos: Of course! We are humans hahaha. We try to rehearse everything we plan to do on stage, but sometimes shit happens hahaha. We try to solve the mistake as quick as we can or pretend that it was part of the plan.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
Rotativos: Well, we will start our first tour this year, so next time we catch up we´ll tell you all the details. 😉
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Rotativos: We usually get together in our grandma´s lead singer house, that´s where we most times met and meet to make songs.
We use our own experiences of life to make a song. Usually, Kau (lead singer) gives a lyric to Luiz (guitarrist) and then they start to create together.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
Rotativos: Yes.
