Exposed Vocals Interviews Luke Potter
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Luke Potter:  I grew up with music around me. My Dad was in a band way back when that was actually managed by a very young Simon Cowell so there was always a guitar around too. Then one day I heard The Goo Goo Dolls song. ‘Iris’ on the radio and the words and melody just made me want to pick up the guitar and write songs. I was seventeen and I’ve been writing songs ever since J

Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Luke Potter: It’s just my name – honest! My parents were great Star Wars fans (we even had a dog called Ewok when I was young) so that produced Luke. The Potter thing turned out to be memorable because of the young wizard in all those films haha.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Luke Potter: That’s not an easy one. We work hard to make music and there’s always a cost in producing it and getting it out there. And we’re all trying to make a living from music but now and again I’ll let my friends and followers download a song just to say thanks and all that!
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Luke Potter: Record a song, make a video and upload it. Go find places where people play and ask to play. That’s all the same as it’s ever been I think and there are always open mic nights to practise playing and singing. And you can play direct to fans through the internet. I did a show through StageIt and it was great fun playing and interacting online.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather song writing inspiration? What is your usual song writing process?
Luke Potter: I write from my own experiences and that of friends. I just like to be honest with my feelings. And I hope people hear that in my songs. For me it’s about making truthful music; each song has a story or an emotion behind it.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
Luke Potter:Â My website is http://www.lukepottermusic.com and all my social media links can be found there plus videos, news and lots of other stuff
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
Luke Potter: I’d seriously want to help people in need and I’d make sure I donated to help young people in particular – maybe music support because everyone should have the opportunity to be able to make music. And I’d record all the songs I’ve been saving up and write some more!
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Luke Potter: I use all the social media and try to produce the songs and videos to the best quality that I can make them. There’s so much music out there so I just try and make it the best it can be and hope that people find it and share it.

Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Luke Potter: ‘All The Same’ is the first of three singles I plan to put out in 2016. I have a few shows planned and a secret project that I’m going to be announcing around September. It’s a bit different but I’m pretty excited about it. I’m also hoping to visit Sweden again (I’ve been there 4 times in the last 9 months) to write and record with friends. And I’d love to make another album even if singles seem to be more popular now.
Â
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Luke Potter: I’d probably be working with children in some way or other. Alternatively, I love keeping fit and working in the leisure / fitness industry might be something I’d consider. At the moment I only have the plan to make music so they aren’t really options J
Â
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
Luke Potter: It’s not always easy but my family are so supportive and my friends really do understand that I have to let my music come first!
Â
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
Luke Potter: New music that I’m pretty psyched about and the new secret project too!
Thanks for having me. Luke J
