Exposed Vocals Interviews Kate Lynne Logan!

Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest. I was always an artist. I drew and painted pictures from the time I could hold a pen. Drawing was my first love until I picked up a guitar in early high school. At that point, I started painting pictures with words instead. I still draw from time to time.

Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?

Kate Lynne Logan is my given name. I thought it sounded just fine, so I kept it.

Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?

I share my music for free from time to time. I currently have a few songs up on Noisetrade. I wish I could give all my music away, but that’s not a sustainable business model, and does not a career make. I think it’s hard for people to understand the impact free music has on smaller artists sometimes. Smaller artists can’t continue to make high quality recordings if no one is paying for the music.

Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?

I found someone I admired in music, and tried to follow in her footsteps. It’s different for everyone. Time and technology change things so quickly. Rarely can two people do exactly the same thing and have exactly the same outcome. I guess I’d just say make a recording to have at your shows. Play as often as you can in the beginning, to get over your nerves and also get your name out there. Learn as much as you can from the people around you. Do what’s right for you, but stay open and humble.

Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?

I do make mistakes. I generally play right through them. Unless it’s a real train wreck of a mistake, in which case, I can’t help but laugh.

Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?

I haven’t done extensive touring, just shows in different states here and there. Festivals.

Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?

I get my songs mostly from memories that still carry a lot of weight. I free write sometimes – just sit down and let whatever needs to come out, come out. I don’t try to write music at that point, just words. Later, I play around on the guitar for hours at a time, looking for a chord progression I like. When I find one, I look through lyrics I’d written previously, and see if anything stands out.

Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?

My website is www.katelynnelogan.com. I mostly share on Twitter (@katelynnelogan) and Noisetrade. I have a few songs up on Soundcloud.

Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?

I recently found an old iPod, so probably a lot of 90s country and pop. N*SYNC, that sort of thing.

Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?

The first thing I’d do is drop everything and go on vacation for a week or two, somewhere sunny and warm. Then I’d pay off my student loans, move, and build a sweet studio in my house. And probably season tickets for the Seahawks next year.

Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?

No upgrades right now. I make demos with an Sapphire 6 and an Audio technica condenser microphone.

Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?

I really don’t know.

Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?

I would want to sing with Brandi Carlile. She’s been a huge influence and inspiration to me.

Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?

I’m working on a new album. I have the songs nearly ready. I’ll be live-recording it in May, just for a different take than the usual. I’ll have a ticket link soon, for those in the Seattle area who are interested.

Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?

In a dream world: writing poetry and drawing. In reality: working a desk job.

Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?

It was a tape – Duncan Sheik.

Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?

I think everyone is either looking for balance, or trying to maintain it. It isn’t easy. I’m learning daily.
