Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?  

D Nelson: i grew up in flint , michigan on the north side. I became an artist because i love entertaining people.

Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?

D Nelson: well d nelson is literally my government name so thats why i use it.. I couldnt think of any other name that fits me so i use d nelson. Im thinking of changing it to (TUTU) because thats all i wear.

Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?

D Nelson: online music sharing is really effective! It really helps get your music all over the world! Yes i give away music for free, because why would someone who does not know you want to buy it? You have to gain fans and free things always gets people attention!

Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?

D Nelson: make sure you make radio versions of songs when you make your song because you never know who’s ready to put you on air! Stay at every show even if its only two people there and do what you suppose to do , good things come from that honestly!

Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?

D Nelson: i haven’t made a mistake yet. But if i ever make one i will know how to handle it and just make it look good.

Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about? 

D Nelson: I haven’t been on tour YET! But i have been getting alot of opportunities to tour! Im independent so i have to really look into things and see if i can really do that.

Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?  

D Nelson: well things around me thats going on, I might be in the middle of a conversation and say something I like then i just go with it , like hey i like that and start writing no matter where im at. I usually just type lyrics in my phone thats my usual songwriting process.

Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?

D Nelson: i dont have my own band website but i am on one for a single i am putting out with Sony/Orchard/Shinegang , called “Inches” . I use facebook, twitter, spinrilla, Instagram, and snapchat to share my music.

Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?

D Nelson: i dont have an mp3 player , i usually just listen to pandora.

Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?  

D Nelson: well first thing i would do is buy alot of water for my city, the pipes is still messed up and poisoning, i would put some family through school to learn how to fix the problem, then i would pay all of my grandma bills and my own and buy my daughter whatever she wants! And of course do alot of music videos.

Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?  

D Nelson: well my producer just upgraded everything. I dont know the programs but they are nice!

Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?

D Nelson: making videos, taking pictures that attracts attention, pay facebook on my fan page, go live on Facebook and talk about it, put snippets of songs up on Instagram and Twitter, wear my own brand when im out and about so people can ask what is it.

Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why? 

D Nelson: omg! I would totally love to perform at Coachella, with nicki minaj , beyonce’, rihanna, august alsina and bryson tiller! I love all of them their so awesome. And Coachella is so dope inside.

Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?

D Nelson : im working on a EP called tutu’s and tattoos, its named that because thats what i love. I have my single coming out with Sony/Orchard/Shinegang called inches coming out on a compilation with 9 other dope artist on August 19th it will up and ready to download for 99cent on itunes and other music platforms.

Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?  

D Nelson: i would probably just be doing tattoos and hair. I do alot of things!

Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?  

D Nelson: yes the first one I bought was beyonce’s first solo album, i was soooooo excited!!

Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?  

D Nelson: it’s really easy to me i just make sure things dont land on the same days and if they do pick which is more important, and im always at work ! I work the right shift so i can still make it to shows.

Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?  

D Nelson: fans should be looking for more and better music! More love and more tutu’s 🙂
