Exposed Vocals Interviews Ace Mirrorman
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Ace Mirrorman: I grew up in Detroit, MI. Had truly humble beginnings in many different places around the city. I’ve never staid in one location for too long. I was a loner. Never had more than friends in school I would talk to. That kind of made me a target for bullying. Nothing physical just metal. What made me become a artists was my passion for engaging with people. I’ve always had this drive to connect with people, but didn’t have a form of attraction. That’s when I began using my imagination. One of my elementary school reading/writing teachers helped me realize my potential as a writer and opened me up to creating my own story. I’ve been creating it ever since. Its starting to manifest now.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Ace Mirrorman: Again when I mentioned that I really had a passion to connect with people. I wasn’t playing. Its was all apart of the story. My dad was know as Jack to his friends and I would be called the lil Ace or Andy from time to time. As I got older I had to destroy the name Andy. So I started signing everything as Ace. Mirrorman is a different story. I wrote a poem back when I was in junior high school called The Mirrorman. It won an in school award for being the most creative work in the class. “A man standing over a shattered mirror to find himself reflected in every piece. Every piece is a different shape, A different size and catching him from a different angle. As different as they all are. They are all still reflecting him. Their was more detail but that’s the gist. lol In my journey I see people as mirrors. Reflecting parts of ourselves back at us. That idea made things very interesting in a hip-hop culture full of ego driven will.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Ace Mirrorman: I love sharing my music and giving it to the people for free. I understand the power of the dollar. But I get something of a lot more value when a fan tells me how my music helped them. Their are so many ways to make money from the music that giving the music away seems like the smart thing to do. especially when you’re just starting out. As you build your brand and build self/brand confidence, I feel you will understand the best way to successfully build revenue for yourself without being greedy.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Ace Mirrorman: The biggest advice I can give is to spend time with yourself to build on who you are. That is what people buy into, not your music. Your music is a reflection of you and your culminated experiences. If you are not standing in your truth/Integrity the audience will know. It took me years to realize that my music was not up to standard because I wasn’t being my authentic self. Self knowledge is the key to success.
