Exposed Vocals: How did you hear about Exposed Vocals? What made you decide to sign up?
The Waatcher: I originally heard about exposed vocals when I heard our collaborative “Let It Go” was actually put up on the site by a DJ,right before we ended up on MTV. I decided that It was a great outlet to interact with fellow artists and share ideas. It’s rather difficult to not get inspired!
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
The Waatcher: Well it depends do you wanna know about the bay area childhood life or would you like to know about my upstate life?
I suppose I’ve been in New York for the majority of my life now, but still isn’t quite home. I was born in Manhattan, first and foremost, that’s when I started to get the gist of my mother’s Jon Secada and Whitney Houston as well as my Uncle’s flair for the ‘Sade’ and ‘Enigma’collection. My mother said I used to just look up at the radio from the crib and idolize the voices. I think that was the beginning besides Michael Jackson’s moonwalk.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
The Waatcher: Not many people know this but I originally started going by my first name,Joshua, but when it came down to branding a name to my voice I decided before this goes to the next level I have to transition. The Waatcher soothes you, watches out for you and listens to what’s inside you. The extra ‘A’ is for my family last name so I remember to stay humble from whence I came.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
The Waatcher: I won’t say it’s not an effective marketing tool, but it’s called the music business, haha ya know? However, I did with my first two solo vocals,Ferngully and Grace, we’ll see what direction I go with after ‘Red Hot’….who knows such things so soon?
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
The Waatcher: Of course! make sure you gave it your all… if it’s your passion, pursue every fruit on that tree ..to the fullest. Atleast then, you can say you gave it your best.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
The Waatcher: Of course I do but I just keep going ..I’m a perfectionist when it comes to my music..I’ve heard alot of colleagues say “that was hot” or “stop beating yourself up” but I know my potential. Why cheat yourself.. keep going, polish up,get better. You’ll see alot of growth when GHOSTRONIX finishes their record 😉
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
The Waatcher: A long overdue London tour with a couple of my partners in creative.. Everyone’s schedule is different.and my mindset is all “album’s first –album’s first! ” But time will tell.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
The Waatcher: Up until now since Sade and Enigma, no one really peaked my creative interest until FKA Twigs, that talented young woman is a genius, I dont only see music in her wave. She has more to offer.
Meditation is huge for me. I create most of my material from scratch so it starts with the melody, honestly, but sometimes with peers, I’ll freestyle to something old school and a modernized radio friendlier version will give me a “stroke of genius”, that’ when I disappear for hours.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
The Waatcher: No main domain but it will be my band camp when I drop my official artist album and tumblr. Tumblr is my latest addiction. Mainly soundcloud, facebook and twitter. I keep it simple.
Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?
THE Waatcher: Embarrassing? That’s a hard one. Honestly, I only listen to stuff I’m working on most of the time. Perhaps a couple earlier Enrique Iglesias songs,.. I don’t know haha
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
The Waatcher: Half a milli…. Hmm, Fund a spectacular video, a house for mum, and continue with music. (No days off!)Perhaps even upgrade studio situation ;p
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
The Waatcher: Almost all my new music has been produced/ curated by myself, besides a couple collaborations I’m channeling alot of energy into such as the ‘GHOSTRONIX’ project. I’ve definitely found growth ad a producer the last couple of months, you’ll notice that in the ‘Red Hot’ record, quite proud of it right now, but there’s even better on the horizon. I also like to keep my engineer’s creative depth flowing, and so do they. Besides Logic- fruity loops, recently ableton has become a good companion to my never ending creative process.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
The Waatcher: I usually just let the masses on twitter or facebook know a couple days prior to releasing a project like I did with ‘Red Hot, recently.I don’t want to pull a Beyoncé but I like to let listeners know something’s coming in fast..keep them on their senses and toes haha!
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
The Waatcher: Sade, Michael Jackson or Kanye West,Madison Square Garden or Juno Reactor;Tiesto in Paris!
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
The Waatcher: I just dropped my last volume of my Insomniac mix series original EP mix, entitled ‘Red Hot’ a couple hours ago as a Valentine’s thank you to my fans, following the first lead single with late released ‘Prism’.. The fans really like that one and I’m not even singing on it.. Good vibes. I love it.But all new original Waatcher music very shortly to hold everyone off while I finish my album.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
The Waatcher: Perhaps a lawyer, ambassador or community counselor helping with world causes and speaking on important topics that need change. I do that enough with my fans alone whenever I can to keep them aware. Maybe even what Leonardo Dicaprio has been doing..long as it’s bigger than me.
Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?
The Waatcher: I think it was Ricky Martin at a really young age with my mother. He’s the man to this day. I was thinking “la Vida loca” haha
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
The Waatcher: I honestly answered that for myself yet but I think my supportive family and crazy party animals friends keep me going. It’s good to get out of studio mode sometimes I guess..
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
MTV’s The Waatcher: Fans should look forward to a Debut Album. I think they they’ve waited long enough.
