Exclusive Interview with J M.A.X.X
A hungry rapper, unsigned, the struggle…. that’s what I’d say if you asked me to describe J M.A.X.X
Hip-hop, which is usually associated with gritty, inner-city neighborhoods, may seem out of place in rural Southern Maryland, but these rappers are just as gifted and motivated as those from any urban areas. Many of these artists are using music to escape from the same socio-economic problems which frequently plague metropolitan environments. With lyrics like “man I been humble / man I been patient” “Tired of waiting” you can’t help but feel the urgency to “get it started” …
You know that song that makes you feel like you just need to vibe to? Well ‘Get It Started’ is that hit.
J.M.A.X.X spits flames on this track – lyrically, this is masterful and the beat has all the makings of a great club banger. “I be on that shit that keep you moving / keep you rock’n” J M.A.X.X has bars for days and punch lines that will leave you rewinding this track like “Wait..what?”
In the eyes of most city dwellers Southern Maryland is still viewed as being “country”. But rappers like J M.A.X.X don’t care about misconceptions – they represent. The Southern Maryland rap movement is consistently gaining momentum and becoming more popular – escpecially with break-out artists like J/ M.A.X.X

Exclusive Interview:
Exposed Vocals: How did you hear about Exposed Vocals? What made you decide to sign up?
I heard about Exposed Vocals on Twitter. I signed up because I am an up and coming artist, I couldn’t turn down the exposure, or the opportunity to network with new artists and fans.
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
I grew up in Southern Maryland, a place with many different cultures and lifestyles. I’ve lived on my own since I was 16 and my father took his life when I was just 17. I became an artist because music has always been a release for me. A place to get out all my emotions, all my pain, however I’m feeling at that very moment.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
I’ve gone threw several names since I first started. Lil Johnny, Lj Special, Kripptonn. But I think they were all fictional characters. I wanted something a little more personal, a little closer to home. I decided to finally run with J M.A.X.X., due to my birth name, Jonathan Maxson. My slogan also played a part, “Do it to the MAXX”, passed down from my fathers business.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
I believe online music sharing is a very positive thing. In this day and age, it is a great way for independent or unsigned artist to get exposure they need. And yes, I give away free music. I’ve only released one project, “For the People”. Available for free download on Datpiff. But my next project I’m selling for sure, because it isn’t cheap getting your name out there [chuckles].
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
I’m still learning everyday, but if I had to say something I’d say, believe in yourself, stay true to yourself, invest in yourself. Surround yourself with people who are getting it like you’re trying to get it. And last but not least, stay consistent!!! Even when it seems like all the odds are against you.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
It happens!! It can ruin your whole set, but it’s up to you to catch yourself, the key is not to panic.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
I have yet to go on tour, but I have performed many times and been to enough events to say, this is Hip Hop, there is always something entertaining happening.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
I get inspiration from my experiences, my struggles, my surroundings, my life. I usually write early in the morning, MAXX OUT the volume knob, and just vibe. Fade away.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
I do not have my own website, but you can stay up to date with all of my news and material at www.reverbnation.com/RealJMaxx . And you can find me on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube @RealJMaxx.
Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?
I’m sure I have one or two [chuckles]. But all of the music I have has inspired me in some way.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
I wouldn’t take a day off, that doesn’t get the bills paid. That won’t get me where I want to be. But with the money I would take care of what ever debt I have, help my community, buy a few things for my family, and invest the rest.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
I used to produce, record, and engineer all my own music. I used Protools Mp9. But for my next project I will be working with other producers, and recording at another studio, quite an upgrade from my home studio.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Social media is a big way to promote. I also give away FREE hard copies of my mixtape and wristbands. I will soon add t’s and hoodies to the mix.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
Dead, Tupac, because in my eyes he’s THE GREATEST…… Alive, I’d have to say Kendrick Lamar, and in Cali, because of the impact he’s had on hip hop the last few years, and everyone wants to feel that Cali Love [chuckles].
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Be on the lookout for my sophomore mixtape, “Thoughts of a Young King”. Plans on releasing mid- 2015. I’m Also working on the concept and production of my debut album.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
I’d have to say I would probably try to get in the food business.
Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?
My first album was actually Tupac “Greatest Hits”, thanks to my big sister. The first song I heard was “Changes”. And considering my father raised me on mainly classic rock, it blew me away, I’d never heard anything like it, I fell in love.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
It’s hard!! I am married with a 4 year old son, so it’s like you said, you have to juggle them. You have to find a medium, try to keep your family happy and not slack off with the music.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2015?
World domination [chuckles]. Be on the lookout for my next mixtape. I plan to have a well esablished buzz in the hip hop world, and to start doing more shows. Maybe even a East Coast tour. Only time will tell.
