Eden Marquis – Your Shadowed Vixen ” something human and emotional to connect with”
This track has a certain lightness and clarity that comes as quite refreshing in the context of an R&B or soul inspired release. The melody and the leading vocal style takes influence from classic R&B and pop, but there’s a definite softness to both that further feeds into that gentle ambience and helps to create something fairly new sounding. As the music moves along, the beat appears to have something of an organic, perhaps tribal or world music influenced edge. The bass line has more of a trip-hop soaked energy to it, and the overall mood of the track seems to fit quite loosely yet fairly into this category.
As a soundscape, it’s easy to listen and relax to. There are certain moments of creativity within the musical mix that keep the movement interesting, yet there is always this thread of consistency that is the rhythm and the sound of that leading voice. There’s a subtle smoothness to it all that means you’re never let down by the music, the ambience continues to surround you, and still these intermittent, small yet striking moments of character offer enough change and evolution to keep things interesting from start to finish. And it is an interesting sound, not dissimilar to the classic release from Morcheeba back in the day, even adding a dash of Portishead on occasion.
The meeting of the production and the songwriting has worked really well. The beat alone sets a certain vibe in terms of easy listening and escapism, but with the song involved you get the added blessing of storytelling, of something human and emotional to connect with. There are certain moments when both elements are elevated to a particularly dreamlike point, acting as a hook, essentially, and this too adds depth.
