Double Feature: Junior “In Love Wit Da Money” & “Gimmie H**d Too”
The late, great Biggie Smalls once penned one of the realest statements in the world, “Mo’ Money, Mo Problems.” That couldn’t be more true for the streets and Trey Songz’s newest artist, Junior, who illustrates the saying vividly in the visuals to his new single, “In Love With The Money” now spinning on *BET JAMS!
The video, directed by Bryan Alan, masterfully captures the essence and lyrics of the song as it shows how some money Junior passed to a neighborhood junkie continuously switches hands in the drug trade – ala The Red Violin. This compelling piece reminds us that with dirty money comes with dirty consequences. The “Best Friend” rapper spoke with VIBE about the inspiration behind the record and how motivating it is for hustlers everywhere when the video premiered: “The record came from a really organic space that’s relatable to every tax bracket,” he explains. “Feel good music that motivates your everyday grind and encourages you to go out and get what you deserve!”
Luckily, throughout all of the trials and tribulations of growing up in the foster system and running the streets, J.R. has always had music. And back in 2014, he finally garnered national attention when his up-tempo, yet gritty, “I’m Just Saying” hit radio track. The song picked up more steam when Nelly and Tiffany Fox hopped on the original remix. Then, crooner Trey Songz took notice of the budding talent by reaching out to J.R. and inviting him on tour – “…the most important thing is Trey’s guidance. Seeing how hard he has to work during the tour, how late he stays up, how many days he stays up. He takes a big role in mentoring me as far as how to handle certain situations. It’s just a blessing to have him there.”
J.R. gained more notoriety after releasing his ‘Gang Season’ EP, which showcases his knack for penning catchy hooks. In standout tracks like “You See It,” “Today,” and “Gang Season,” shows J.R. talent for scribing memorable songs, yet keeping that street edge to it. While the Trey Songz-assisted “Best Friend” shows J.R.’s talent for waxing radio-friendly songs alongside industry heavyweights, which to date has seen over 5.6 million views on YouTube, the Midwest sensation quickly becoming a fan favorite on the iTunes charts, holding 5 star ratings.
Now, with the release of “In Love Wit Da Money” touring with Trey, appearances at SXSW and a new EP in the works, J.R. is changing the game and stepping out of the shadows to prove that he’s here, he’s talented, and you’ll want to rock with him going forward.
