Cosmic Zimmer “Drunk But Not Wasted” “Comes across as something of a dream”
Music Review and Exclusive Interview with Cosmic Zimmer
Cosmic Zimmer is actually a really strong name to represent this music. The initial opening to Almost Bedtime has something of a cosmic ‘shimmer’ about it, strangely enough, though the leading vocal and indeed the r&b style of the melody come quite unexpectedly. The track has a back and forth vocal presentation, as if it’s two voices, two people even, batting these ideas and these lines back and forth.
The music moves forwards in a fairly dream-like and hypnotic manner. The backing track goes around and around and a sense of familiarity quickly develops. The vocal part, however, has something of a freestyle vibe about it. The performance seems very in the moment, it brings a combination of manic and calm energy, intermittently. The lyrics give off a feeling of improvisation on occasion, but this actually works really well in among the other worldly ambiance of the music. The whole thing comes across as something of a dream, a fantasy, a far away story for your head to escape to. The consistency of the lyrical outpouring is effective in this sense. Similarly, the structure of the songwriting – the flow of the lines, the unchanging melody – all of this adds to this round and round, day to day vibe.
The varying vocal features within the set offer a different sound, different characters, yet actually the tracks all have a distinct thread – even the songwriting itself lines up well with the mood put out by the music. The melodies follow a certain style that appears to be unique to the Cosmic Zimmer sound, and this is a consistency that should work well in keeping listeners interested and coming back for me. The round and round style of the melody is a big part of this thread.

Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
I am a Dutch National from the Dutch Caribbean. My first music lessons I got from a music teacher who studied Film Scoring at the Berklee university of music. My love for strings in my music is probably genetics but also subconsciously his influence. The first day I told him I want to learn “notes” he told me to sit down and he played The Godfather theme on his keyboard and it sounded like an orchestra and he said music is not notes, but it comes from the heart.
After that I went to college in the Netherlands, worked in the IT, Commerce and Robotics and lived in many countries in Europe. I have been making music for more than 13 years. The music for the album Drunk but Not Wasted were produced 70% in Vienna, Austria and the rest in Holland and Germany.
My friend Martin a gastronomy legend in Vienna. He took out his $7000 Guitar, start playing my to my music and told me, that what I was making is on another level and that I should make an album, he was the constant push.
