Brand new ‘Minimix’ by Austrian DJ Hanuman Vienna “quite enjoyable to hear a Gorillaz cover in a language other than English.”
The intensely gradual manner in which this release unfolds and evolves is incredibly captivating. Beginning with just a few simple elements, creating an ambient or music-less soundscape within which your mind can wander alone at first, then slowly becoming something much more instrumentally organic and vocal and powerful. There’s a mixture of soul and organic rock and even trip-hop, teetering at times towards the Massive Attack side of the musical spectrum.

Of course, all of this comes to an end at just over two minutes in, and the organic side of things is focused on much more intently. The acoustic honesty of this second snippet of sound has a certain rawness and realness that feels as if the singer is right there in the room with you, that this performance is for you and you alone. The effect of this is actually greatly enhanced due to its placement within the mix. The following thickness of the beat and the remix immediately afterwards hits with added impact due to the contrast.
It’s an interesting mix, completely unpredictable and creatively varied so as to keep you on your toes yet simultaneously engaged and entertained by everything that comes to pass. It’s quite enjoyable to hear a Gorillaz cover in a language other than English.
There’s a lot of personality that comes through in this and indeed in all of the performances featured throughout this mix. The music sounds great, loaded with good energy and inspiring ambiance. The variety makes it a little vague in terms of its intention, but its always better to offer variety, to keep people wondering – that element of intrigue and mystique – than to offer something very specific and to never waver from that ideal. The mix doesn’t get tiresome because there’s so much that is consistently changing within.
