Exposed Vocals Interviews Qilla-B
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
I was raised under a Huge Jamaican palm tree in Queens, NY.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Killa-B was a name friends used to differentiate me among the other guys with names starting with B, because “B” is a common nickname for such. The Q in Killa-B (Qilla-B) represents Queens, NY. As well as it represents a unique artist unafraid to be himself regardless of the stigma behind this stereotypical “Gangster rap name”
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Online music sharing is great because It’s free flowing and if its good music it will impacted those in need. Of course! I want to build credibility with my fans.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Create music for your life. Doing so you will inspire other who share or shared the same situation. Good music/Real music will take you anywhere people will recognize your talent.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Hell yea. Once I messed up so bad I freestyle the whole song and no one noticed. Except for my family who knew the words to my song. “Eff up” as much as you can now because in the big leagues people know your lyrics and will notice. But who knows fans like spontaneous performance so if you improvise well enough you may want to remix your own song.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
No not yet. Very soon I will tour. It is my dream to travel and perform. Im sure ill have endless stories when I do.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Living life is the most important process. I don’t force anything. Because I am a one-man band which handles everything I can take a step back from recording to refresh ideas and sounds. That gives me a chance to complete other tasks. But one big thing I say to my self while writing is.. “How would I say this to my friends. Or what will Qilla”
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
I am currently fine-tuning the website which will be available before the end of 2016 qillab.com. I share my music on
Soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/qbmusicpage
Facebook https://www.facebook.com/qillabpage
Twitter https://twitter.com/Qilla_B
Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?
I’m not embarrassed about anything I listen to. Due to life changes I have changed my playlist to a more positive vibe. I appreciate all forms of music.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
I would buy all the legal documents I need for my business. Invest in to my “Ill Ass” tour bus and rock out! travel the world double profits with my “right hand”. Stopping at schools, inspiring youth, and experiencing/enjoying the life I want.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
I work with my Mac pro, Maschine Mk 2, M Audio interface, speakers and Logic pro.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
I promote my music by being me. Simply loving the skin I’m in, fearless. Once I understood and created that confidence everything lines up like it is now.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
Sheesh. I really would be happy just to dance with Michael Jackson and blaze with Bob Marley on or off stage honestly. I see my self on stage performing with so many people that I can’t really decide on one with out naming every other.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
All I got to say is a lot of original Qilla-B music, which also means there will be a project. Cant really say if its an mixtape album or EP yet. I’m loving and enjoying my art. I don’t even know what it will evolve into I just know it is evolving. Oh yea videos, videos, and more videos.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Creating other forms of art like I do now or playing for Arsenal in England as mid fielder.
Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?
I can’t remember the first one I bought because my older brother had all the cd’s on deck. I was listening to Nas super early of course Biggie, and Pac, but my early favorite was Eminems LP. Favorite song up to 13 years old was probably renegade Eminem was erupting on tracks. So with me ranting about all the old cd’s I remembered my first album I personally bought and that was Jamie Foxx’s Unpredictable album! I was in high school when I purchased his album. Coming back from an indoor track meet at Penn State. As I’m playing the slow jams I knew I was going to use it to get some “cudi” once I got back home.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
I enjoy it. Never stress it. I make feel good music so I must feel good doing it.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
Well 2016 will be ending very soon. But for the rest of the year expect original music, qillab.com, videos, and performances.
