One Hundred – Alex H feat. Dyon
The rap vocal driving this track has a really unusual tone to it, it’s a unique voice that draws you in to listen. It helps further that there are some fairly unexpected lyrics in the track, so once you’re involved, you stay put to check it all out. The chorus section, the melodic part, was also quite unexpected – the big beat and the intensity of the backing track from the very start gives the impression of there being a chanting, anthemic section coming up; rather than a melodically controlled and stylish part. The result is much more desirable, it sounds great – the hook is cool sounding, and it sort of successfully fuses the calm and the manic, as does the rest of the song actually.
There’s a lot to like about it; some moments, during the third verse in particular, feature some really unusual rap flows – the whole thing has a lot of character, as a result of the unexpected melody, which is brilliant, and the unusual vocal tone and lyrical content. You could clearly notice the difference between this track and something that is merely a very basic backing track looped with someone speaking some rhymes over it. There’s a lot more that is interesting here.
That hook section is a real strong point, if anything it could be even louder within the mix, repeated a couple more times perhaps – it’s a really stylish performance and a slick sounding vocal riff. For the purpose of creating memorable, ear catching music, so to speak, having a hook that stands out like this is a really useful element to run with. The two artist’s have collaborated really effectively, and the result is something with a classic yet original sound; there’s a little of that hip-hop nostalgia, but for the most part there’s something brand new to listen loudly to.
