DJ Sun Junkie ft. Cece Peniston – Piece Of That
The track has a pretty vintage r&b sound to it for the most part, yet there’s a significant edge of distortion with those synths, plus that thick and heavy beat – there’s a little of everything in there, and the featured vocal is stylishly appropriate for this kind of fusion of sounds. The vocals sound great, in both cases there is an effortless flow to the performance, the singing is just as it needs to be, carrying those melodies and that hook effectively. The rap vocal is mellow and easy to listen to, not screaming for attention, just grabbing it with a smooth and confident sort of swagger. The two voices contrast and collaborate really well.
In terms of the musicality, there’s an ongoing riff in this track, throughout the whole song actually, that you don’t necessarily notice at first – but once you’ve heard it, you can’t help but notice it. The sound is again reminiscent of the classic r&b sound of the early 2000’s, this riff in particular, light and synthy, optimistic notes chosen against the back drop of a somewhat seductively dark beat; it brings a smile to the sound, and that’s a really nice touch.
The song is well written, you’ll remember the hook, the rap vocal is also really well placed within the structure and the mix – it comes in just at the right time to keep things interesting, and as mentioned, it doesn’t think too much of itself; it just plays it’s part and adds an extra dynamic to the song. The production is a big part of what gives the track it’s vintage sound, but it’s well worked in that you can focus on each element intermittently, you can notice each part as it comes in – the riff, for example, and the finer qualities of each of the vocals.
