Music Review for Brittney Chantele – Operator
As with the first track I heard from Brittney Chantele, Operator follows the same creatively free route as R.I.S.E – it let’s the music and the lyrics do the work, which gives it this organic feel, while still upholding a very modern and fresh presentation. This track is intrinsically simplistic, a simple beat, some highly effective storytelling, and a really mellow and easy to take in vibe throughout.
The great thing about this track is that it has this musical hook, these quite hectic, urgent sounding synth or strings, which play over the Operator hook-line. An instrumental hook is a clever way to get your music to really sink in when people listen to it – rather than relying on the use of some overly catchy pop-driven melody. It’s this instrumentation that seems to shine the most and highlight the chorus section, more so than the melody of this particular part, but that’s not to take away from the vocal melody itself – it does it’s job superbly, and you look forward to it reappearing as the track moves forward.
I really like how the music falls away and re-builds from time to time. The music falls back entirely at some points, so you really just hear the words for what they are – you focus completely on the lines, the concept, the ideas behind all of it. There are many lyrics in this one, so the chorus is crucial, and the melody is, as mentioned, just as it needs to be – it all works and fits together quite well. Having heard two tracks from Brittney Chantele now I can really get a feel for her style and her sound. It’s an interesting one, as the vocal effects used mean that the voice itself is not what becomes familiar, but more so the lyrical style and the themes that are featured in the song writing.
