New Interview with Nigerian artist ‘Femz’
Exposed Vocals: How did you hear about Exposed Vocals? What made you decide to sign up?
Femz: I was on my twitter one day and i saw a retweet of Exposed Vocals, i was quite intrigued by the name so decided to check it out and that’s when i found out what Exposed Vocals was about and I was interested to join
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Femz: I was born in Nigeria and moved to England when i was 6 years old, Lived in Hackney at first then moved to Essex, Tilbury. I had always been interested in music from a young age especially in all types of Drums. I started Playing the drum set at the age of 8 I was self taught and people said i was amazing. I started playing the Piano at the age of 10 which was a mix of Having lessons and being self taught. Around that age I listened to one of N Dubz tracks called Girls, I was interested in the Rap parts so I started singing and rapping the song almost everyday till I knew every verse. I started listening to other artist in those categories. When i was 12 years old My friend told me about JME and BBK so i listened to JME’s track 96 f**kries and i loved it, from then on i started listening to more of JME and BBK and started creating my own covers to his songs. I could say JME is one of my idols because if not for him i wouldn’t be the artist i am today. Many other artist had my attention making me change from different genre’s but i decided to stick with UK Rap and Grime.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Femz: It’s quite a funny story actually. My artist name first started as Rapstr Peez seeing as Peter was my name and p’s meant money. Then it changed to PTR because i thought the name was befitting for me and was a bit basic, PTR Meaning Peter the Rock and an abbreviation for Peter. Then early last year i decided to go for something that didn’t sound as weird as the others but also had my name in and seeing as my other name was Babafemi i decided to shorten it and call myself Femz.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Femz: I think online music is brilliant it allows music to be shared quite broadly allowing many people to hear it. I haven’t really giving any of my music away but i have made 2 Songs which i out on soundcloud this was because i wanted somewhere to place my music on
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Femz: Well i am still a start up myself but one thing i can say is that, look for chances where you could share your music to people who are in the music business because it’s all about luck and talent.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Femz: I hardly make mistakes because i make sure i’m in the right state of mind during performance. Although if i were to make a mistake i would decide to freestyle the performance and urge the audience to cooperate
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
Femz: Nah, i haven’t had the chance to tour yet
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Femz: Normally on the road, lyrics come into my head most probably due to situations i’m going through. But it mostly happens when i hear a beat which i like and that‘s when my music writing ability is at it’s best. Usually i would make the hook/chorus then so that it’s to perfection I do 1 verse each day so if any better lyrics pop into my head, i would replace it.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
Femz: I use Soundcloud to share my music because it’s the most accessible app to put my songs on
Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?
Femz: I have a few Rock songs which I used to listen to, not that i was into the genre but i listened to the drums and the tunes of the songs as inspiration to when Drumming or Playing Piano/Keyboard
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
Femz: I would buy my own studio which i can always access for free and others can use, but they would need to pay. I would bring out visuals of my songs on popular Music Youtube Channels and make many Songs and Mixtapes
