Fearful Earful Takes DIY Pop Into The Stratosphere With Buzzy, Dancey “Hyperphantasia”
Fearful Earful (aka Jonathan Olson) lifts off into DIY synthpop bliss with evocative title track “Hyperphantasia” from his brand new debut album.
Milwaukee, WI — December 5th, 2022 – This year saw ascending singer-songwriter Jonathan Olson embark on a remarkable bedroom pop journey with the recording and recent release of his first record “Hyperphantasia” under the pseudonym Fearful Earful.
The deeply personal title track, living up to its name (Hyperphantasia: the condition of having extremely vivid mental imagery), is lushly produced and performed, marrying an irresistible disco guitar lick to a moody dance-rock verse, explosive hook, and haunting bridge.
The track – and the entire record – is a shapeshifting exploration of synthpop in its various forms. It’s also an earnest, energetic celebration of popular music and its ability to connect us – through pain, trauma, joy, and ultimately catharsis.
This is reflected in the title track’s past-meets-present sound and in its lyrical, melodic twists and turns, bringing awareness to how differently each of us experiences the world – and how pop music stands alone as this magical conundrum, a communal experience with the singular power to unite us despite our differences.
At present Fearful Earful remains a one-person operation (all music, lyrics, vocals, guitar, bass, synth, programming, and mixing by Jonathan Olson), but the project’s potential, and Olson’s talent for songwriting, appears limitless.
“Technically I may be a brand new artist, but I’m also seasoned, having done this in private for well over a decade. With all the blocks out of the way that previously prevented me from realizing these musical visions, the time is now,” affirms Olson.
“Music has saved me. It’s given me so much life. Now, in the words of the immortal Daft Punk, it’s my turn to ‘give life back to music.’”
