Troy Remedy – Steal My Soul
Troy Remedy taps into a unique hybrid of hip-hop and soul on the powerful “Steal My Soul”. Anchored by the power of a dusty sample the way the song straddles the old and the new feels outright profound. Stylistically too the usage of distortion and heavy beats alongside the softer side of aural atmospheres adds to the power of the piece. By far though the true heart of the entire piece rests within the incredible vocals. Vocals have a duality to them: on one hand they offer a soft, tender touch to the proceedings while occasionally being interrupted by hard-nosed realism. Allowing the track to oscillate between these two extremes gives it a sense of unpredictability, even tension.
With a nostalgic take the song starts off bathed in a yellowed hue. From there everything else simply grows. The beat hits and suddenly the tonal shift becomes readily apparent, as a sense of sadness permeates the whole of the work. Evolution of the sound further emphasizes this loss as things continue down this path. Upon the inclusion of Troy Remedy’s unstoppable flows, the whole thing gains a strong sense of intensity. With this careful exploration the entire track has an emotionally resonant quality to it. As things gradually shift and change they reach a peak for the final stretch of the work, becoming quite haunting.
Sounding like a true classic, Troy Remedy’s “Steal My Soul” lingers in the mind long after it is over.
