Exposed Vocals just caught an exclusive interview with Michael Burrows
Based in the city of Melbourne, Michael Burrows is an original Country, Folk, Rock artist.
On the upcoming, Michael Burrows has toured Nationally & Internationally, collaborated with numerous artists including Neil Finn (Crowded House), hit the charts and been played on a plethora of commercial, community, alternative radio networks around Australia and overseas.
Michael’s music has been described as a fusion of musical genres with hints of artists such as The Beatles, Wilco, Eagles and Ron Sexsmith. From intimate solo shows to full band performances, his songs are deceptively simple about complex things: love, family, home, and trust.
Most recently he has been co-writing with Grammy-award winning artist Frank Myers who penned I Swear (John Michael Montgomery’s version was #1 for 4 weeks on the Country charts. All 4 One’s version was #1 on the Pop charts for 11 weeks). Other Myers hits include I’m Already There’ and My Front Porch Looking In (Lonestar) and ‘You and I’ (Crystal Gale/ Eddie Rabbitt).
Michael recently returned from recording new tracks in Nashville at famed Ocean Way Studios. In addition to Frank Myers, he was produced by Jimmy Nichols (former musical director for Faith Hill and Reba McEntire) and engineered/mixed by (also Grammy-award winner), Steve Marcantonio whose credentials include John Lennon, J. Geils, George Strait, Alabama and recently Thomas Rhett, Taylor Swift and StevenTyler. The songs became Michael’s new EP ‘Turn This Love Around’.
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
I grew up in wonderful Melbourne, Australia. I’ve always been captivated by the way a song could describe my own life better than I could articulate it myself. Songs become the soundtrack to life and the songwriters become legends in your mind because you feel like you know them, and they know you. I really liked that relationship and from an early age, I was performing in front of the class or at music shows my parents would put on for the local community. My brother and cousins all played instruments so every get-together would turn into a jam. We learnt the power of music and the way it could entertain and connect emotion with strangers. My best friend allowed me to play guitar at the school dance and as I only knew one song, he turned the amp down and I mimed the whole show. The girl I took to the dance ended up kissing another guy but I didn’t care, it was so thrilling watching the crowd dance to the music we were making on stage and I was hooked.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
I’m still thrilled when I hear my songs on the radio. It’s a real buzz. The good thing about being a songwriter or producer in 2018 is that there are so many avenues to get your music played on radio. With all the digital streams and social media platforms to get feedback, you can put a song out on a Monday and have a smash hit with thousands of comments, streams and fans by the end of the week. That’s never happened to me of course…but it’s totally possible and if I were younger and starting out, id exploit all of that. There’s still a mystery as to what gets picked up and what doesn’t. You have to put yourself out there that’s for sure. I wasn’t comfortable with that for quite a while but you soon realise that unless you believe in yourself to some degree, how can you expect anyone else to just find you. As an independent you have to be ready to trial and error your way through the endless possibilities. I am lucky to have a small team working really hard to get my music out there, promoted and pushed. One step back, five steps forward.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
I used to get really embarrassed and feel like I had to start over, but after watching some of my favourite artists make mistakes and laugh it off I realized it’s just a part of the show and if anything makes you more appealing and human. I was on tour with Martha Wainwright in Australia and she is such an amazing performer. When she made mistakes, she just laughed, and you couldn’t help just smile along with her. I learnt a lot about performance watching her each night.
Exposed Vocals: Any new equipment purchases? What are you working with now?
I’m totally hopeless with technical gear but I have a whole lot of it that I love playing with. I have a studio in Melbourne and we have been writing and producing jingles for brands around the world. I love guitar pedals and I’m a sucker for the strangest noises. Recently I bought a fuzz pedal that’s a clone of Nels Cline ( Wilco) and it just makes me feel so good when I run it through my Vox AC30 amp. I also collect guitars and my favourite at the moment is s small bodied Maton made in my hometown.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
I am really lucky to now have a small team to help me get the music out. It’s still really tough being independent but we’re starting to see the results. It really is a full time gig. Social media is a really important channel to stay in touch with fans and you’re always trying to connect with new fans so it takes a lot of time. I’m really into Instagram and facebook at the moment just because I can be spontaneous and it’s easy to use. Recently we have worked with PR agencies, social media strategists, Music directors and DJ’s. It’s a big industry and there’s always something you can and should be doing…unless you have a label helping you.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
I would love to open for Jeff Tweedy or Dawes and do a run of theatre shows. The Ryman in Nashville would be quite magical. Then again if Neil Finn from Crowded House/ Fleetwood Mac was looking for some harmonies or to co-write, I’d be on a plane as soon as we finish chatting.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
It’s been an exciting year so far. My 2nd single ‘Turn This Love Around’ is currently No 24 on the AC Billboard charts which is crazy. I’m so proud of the EP we made in Nashville last year and can’t wait to get out on the road and play to my fans. I also have a bunch of new songs that I’d love to record as well as a couple of musical side projects with friends. Either way it’s always about the music and as long as I’m making it somewhere, somehow I’m happy.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
I’d love to be a film maker. I love editing and creating with image. I just can’t sit still.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in the next year or so?
I’m really hoping to come to the US and play some shows, meet some of the great people who’ve made an effort to support me. My next single will come out in march and I hope to share some new music that’s coming together quite fast.
Exposed Vocals: Any Shout-outs?
Big thank you and shout out to Larry Grimes ( US) who’s a big believer in good music and is the driving force and companion on this musical journey.
We have a small team but lots of thanks to SYN (NY) Enoch Chuang (LA) Howie Rosen (LA) Sam Schipman ( NC) and my little family Noe, Dylan and Levi ( AUS)

2018 PRESS
“It’s no wonder Michael Burrows’ latest single Turn This Love Around is attracting a lot of social media attention and getting a heap of support at radio; it’s a strong melodic tune
with a lyric that Ed Sheeran would be keen to have in his songbook.”
RJ Frometa – VENTS MAGAZINE
“This country-esque semi-ballad maintains such a tradition but adorned with a characteristic which is distinct and pleasantly divergent and completely Burrows’ own voice.”
Vince Leigh – BMA MAGAZINE
“Martha Wainwright personally selected Burrows to open her recent concert tour, and he has recorded songs with Neil Finn (Crowded House). Now, he’s bringing his fusion of folk,
Americana and rock styles to the United States.”
Claire Legeron – FOX MAGAZINE
“Delving into this massive dark abyss that is the music industry with a new independent project can result in a plethora of outcomes. For this next artist (and not without struggles
I’m sure) ‘Michael Burrows’ has already found some solace in his debut single release
‘Please Don’t Cry’, making headway with his gripping storytelling and sultry voice.”
Dave Bruce – AMNPLIFY
“Overall, this is a hugely impressive debut release from an upcoming songwriter who has
honed his craft to a high level and is clearly ready for the world stage.” Editor – FAULKNER REVIEW
“If you love and appreciate great song craft and are not yet fully immersed in Michael Burrows new debut work, you should be. If you are familiar and fully acquainted with it but
don’t absolutely love what he does, then there is something wrong with you.” Editor – PUMP IT UP MAGAZINE
“The buzz on the street is that Michael Burrows is bringing “the quintessential mix of classic and contemporary music”, a blend in which Australia’s music scene has been jonesing for quite some time.”
