Interview with artist YOYO NOSA
Exposed Vocals: Is YOYO a given nickname or self made moniker?
Yoyo short for “Yolanda” is what my close relatives, and friends have called me since I was born. Nosa is a condensed version of my last name “Nosakhare”, because people often have trouble pronouncing it. Being that I am a very laidback person, I took on “Yoyo Nosa” as my fun-spirited music alter ego.
Exposed Vocals: What is the inspiration behind the name of your new album?
My new EP “SoulGood” is the verbiage of the inexplicability of love. The first song by the same title, “SoulGood”, explores all those first-time feelings that consume you as you explore the possibilities of starting a new relationship. This turns into the song “Insanity”, which is what infatuation closely resembles when the only thing you seem to talk about is your new boo. Too much of anything though is not good for you, so the EP ends in “Overdose”. Because in its own sense, love is an addictive drug.
Exposed Vocals: Pros and cons of being an independent artist in today’s market?
There are so many cons of being an indie artist in today’s market. It is much harder, more expensive, and very time-consuming to build the foundation you want your brand to grow on. You are more than just an artist when you’re indie. You have to educate yourself in all aspects of the music business, so that you can truly flourish. There’s also many pros to being an indie artist! You have the ultimate freedom of expression, the money you earn goes straight to your pocket, you keep all the rights to your music, and the best part is that one day you can refer to yourself as “self-made”.
Exposed Vocals: You grew up in Las Vegas! Tell us about living, growing up and performing in SIN CITY!
I wouldn’t necessarily recommend raising a child in Sin City. I’ve seen a lot of my teenage friends turn to the endless drug and party scene for solace. Many of them that grew up in this culture seem to get trapped in the mindset that life is one big party. It hinders them from mental growth, and causes them to get involved in violence and drugs. Growing up here for me, allowed me to observe from only the best and the biggest of stars performing in the hotels on the Strip. The party culture does not affect me, but rather inspires me to want more for myself out of life than just a Good Friday night.
Exposed Vocals: Who are your top inspirations in music?
My biggest inspirations are Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder.
Exposed Vocals: If you were not a musician what profession would you have chosen?
If I was not a musician, then I would most likely continue my pursuit to be a film/tv actress. If I was not involved in the entertainment world at all, then I would become a lawyer. People have a difficult time arguing with me, because my arguments are padded with substantial evidence.
Exposed Vocals: Describe your live shows for our readers.
My job as an artist is not done on stage, until every member of the audience is on the same wave as myself. In my live shows, the audience will feel as though they’ve been swooped away on a time-traveling journey with my electric soul.
Exposed Vocals: How will you balance college and your career? And what is your focus of study?
I will be attending Loyola Marymount University this fall and majoring in “International Relations”. I’m a huge people-person and aim for social change whether it be through music or public policy.
