‘Listen’ by Boogie Bang and Diff’rence aka Darrin Cox [Interview]
EXPOSED VOCALS REVIEW SCORE 8.2/10
It looks like it’s going to be a great summer for great music from signed and unsigned artist alike. Boogie Bang, who’s a very talented visual artist, writer, spoken word artist, producer. Also, {;D!FF’RENCE==3 aka Darrin Cox (pronounced diff’rence),a fan turned artist, says HipHop is having that feeling of “allure” again. The two notable emcees hail from O-H-to the dime (Ohio).
After “Boogs” purchased some recording software and they started creating instrumental soundscapes of there own. “D.Cox” started formulating ideas and choruses for fun. He did it unknowingly until friends mistakingly played a cd and heard the potential of the lover of the culture turned underground artist. The two started to think what was a just sport may be a transport. Boogie Bang has collabed with DJ Ekwality as Red Eye Blue ,Is.What?,and currently has a record out with Sorg & Napoleon Maddox. Boogs and D.Cox also had a great response to the single “Smoove Crimino”.
The two emcees also hooked up for a thought accessing song for reflection named “Listen”. It speaks of us as humans refusing to lend an ear and sometimes the humbling effects of the results of such actions. The track is produced by Aesthetic Labs. The hook grabs your attention with presence while the laid back keys and drums are a perfect back drop for thought raising lyricism.
These underground emcees will be featured on the upcoming e.p. E.xtra P.erception.
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Me(Darrin Cox) and Boogie opened a recording studio to supplement income. In-between sessions we would lay down music for artist to review for possible production placement. Boogie at the time was working on a spoken word project and a book but sometimes late night we would record. At the same time technology started giving the average person the ablity to market and sell their music online. So we started working toward the goal of creating and selling audio art.
We grew up in Greater Cincinnati area. A great hotbed for underground hiphop where the likes of Common and Talib Kweli found some beginnings.
I have musical family so it was a natural choice.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
I would suggest to beginning artist to learn and understand the processes of the business of music.
Talent is most definitely important but after that filter is refined it’s about knowing how to be independent artist and building relationships. I would suggest going to a local venue and offer to open for free. If you have a fantastic show most likely you’ll get booked next time. First thing I would do in the pursuit of airplay is to make sure music is properly mixed and master. Sometimes it’s worth the investment of hiring someone to engineer your project.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Lol. Yes forgetting lines of a song free styling through it. only thing you can do is focus and keep your composure .
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
I do research to find the right person for the campaign. I like submitting to blogs
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
If I could perform anywhere with anyone it would be JDilla just for the beats.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
I’m being featured on an e.p. called E.xtra P.erception. I’m also working on a remix project.
