Exposed Vocals just sat down with Brenton Torrens for an exclusive interview
Brenton Torrens is a professional rapper from Adelaide AUS.
He started rapping at age 12 after seeing Eminem on Mtv. Developing his skills, he took up street performing for 4 years and released 1 album and 2 mixtapes. Currently Brenton has starred in a Documentary that captured him busking on the streets and portrayed what “a day in the life” of a street performer is like. Especially as a rapper. He also created a rap course called “So You Want To Rap Huh?” where Brenton teaches people how to become a professional rapper which involves learning advance rap techniques such as multi syllable raps and speed rapping.
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
I grew up in Australia in the state called Adelaide. I became an artist after I saw Eminem on Mtv one day as I was doing the chores around the house. When I saw him on the TV I was instantly inspired to become a rapper myself.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Do something that gets you out there to people. People need to see you and to hear your music. I recommend doing open mics or busking as they are great things to do to get exposure.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Haha yes sometimes I make mistakes, but the real secret is to not make it obvious. When you are performing live only you know when you`ve made a mistake so relax and make it blend into the performance. If it is a big mistake however like you forget your lyrics or you stuff up your delivery just keep going. If you`ve got real supporters they will cheer you on and won`t care.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
No I haven`t been on a tour yet but I definitely will in the near future.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
Well actually I have recently upgraded my studio! I won a scholarship from my University and got paid some money so I invested in a MacBook pro! My production has definitely moved up to the next level.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
I found ways to promote my music by asking people I know, reaching out to networks and doing my own research on google. I have found that doing fb lives on my page gets heaps of engagement and interaction so that helps with promoting my music. I would also do fb ads and post on my page when new tracks are dropping to let people know on what`s going on.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
Haha cool question! I would have to say Yankee Stadium and of course with Eminem. That would be two dreams come true at once haha!
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
I released my debut album at the start of this year called “Starting from Scratch” and did a show for it at a known venue in Adelaide called The Gov. But other than that at the moment I am working on building a loyal fan base and I`m releasing tracks regularly. Might drop a few mixtapes later in the year we will see how we go.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Trying to convince myself to make music haha.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in the next year or so?
Fans can look forward to regular tracks being released, and I am working on doing some music videos so they can keep an eye out for them! Also trying to lock down some support acts.
Exposed Vocals: Any Shout-outs?
For sure. Shout outs to my hometown Adelaide, My mum for her unyielding support, City Standard, Run Wild Productions and all my real fans! We’re going to the top!
