Erik Odsell – Getaway Car
Imagine, music is pumping through the speakers and cool air is flowing through your hair keeping the heat from the California sun at bay as you journeyed down the Pacific Coast Highway. The melody and lyrics to “Getaway Car” are forming in the mind of Erik Odsell as he cruises between Malibu and Santa Monica in a roaring V8.
The Pacific Coastal Highway is a road that covers the coast from Southern to Northern California. This famous American road is a treasure full of sandy beaches and rolling oceans on one side, and the desert mountains of California on the other.
Lyrically, like musically, he is very eclectic and varied, mixing the oblique with the concrete. The song is led by the lilting, pop-influenced vocal melody:
“Let me make it clear / shift to the higher gear / you aint seen nothing yet / what you see aint what You get / I do whatever I please / you wont see me on my knees / one thing I guarantee / you can’t touch me” (To the sound of a screaming V8 engine)
Overall, this is a fantastic pop song performed by an singer and performer, delivered with finesse and feeling. It is a perfect choice as a single, with its radio friendly sound and instantly catchy title hook. It will undoubtedly gain Erik Odsell new admirers to add to his already considerable fan-base, and consolidate his position as authentic pop icon of his era.
While the mainstream has become very much a case of the bland leading the bland, this track offers a hidden treasure to anyone who still regards pop music as an important art form and dares to delve down the rabbit hole. With any justice, this will still be listened to in fifty years time and hopefully beyond. Pop music has a new unsung hero.
Exclusive Interview:
Exposed Vocals: Welcome back, Erik! Thanks for sending us your new single! We’re loving this track right now. So, lets get started and I have to ask. What kind of car are you driving along the Pacific Coast Highway in? You mentioned it’s a V8!
Erik: Thank you so much! At that particular moment when the first idea for this song popped up in my mind I was cruising PCH in a Camaro SS convertible, with the top down.
Exposed Vocals: You said ‘Getaway Car’ is your “I-don’t-give-a-shit-song” and it’s about how you should “Live Life”. totally digging that. Would you like to elaborate on that?
Erik: Well, “Getaway Car” is all about how I can do whatever I please. If I just wanna cruise in my Getaway Car, while people behind me think I’m driving too slow, I will – just knowing I could still outrun every one of them. It’s a way of describing a choice of living. I try to not care much for other people’s expectations on how people should be or live their lives and I think that is a key to being happy. I live my life to the fullest and if, or when, that annoys people I don’t really care. Everyone should try it – it totally rocks! haha
Exposed Vocals: What is working for you these days in the form of promoting your music? What tactics are you using for this single?
Erik: In this day and age there’s so much music being released and it can be hard to push through all the “noise”. So it’s really important to get some media coverage and reviews. So, for one, I’m really happy that I’m doing this interview with you right now! The song is also already listed for airplay on some indie radio stations in the US and in Europe and hopefully it will be listed on some national radio stations back home in Sweden in the near future.
Exposed Vocals: What other projects are in the works? Anything you can talk about?
Erik: Well Getaway Car is the second single off my upcoming album called Human that will be released later this year. My first single off the album, called Love Riot, was released in November last year and it was well received with great reviews. I’m also planning on doing one or two videos which will be released along with the album later this year.
Exposed Vocals: Any gigs coming up that you’d like to talk about?
Erik: Well I have a couple of gigs and a mini tour booked with some other projects I’m working on but unfortunately no gigs with my solo material before the album will be released – but hopefully I will book some shows when the album is out. I’m really eager to come out and play all of my new tunes!
Exposed Vocals: Any Shout-outs?
Erik: Always! First of all to my amazing friend and songwriting colleague Morten Kjær who co-wrote Getaway Car with me and also to my very talented friend and co-producer Henrik Hansson at Cobber Media in Malmö, Sweden, who co-produced the song and also mixed it. I also wanna send a big hug to my co-musicians Anders Carlsson (bass), Tomas Erlandsson (drums) and Anna Blindh-Carlsson (backing vocals) and to my friend Joel Bexelius for assisting with the recording at The End Studios. Those guys make me sound good!
