Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
My story is a true one. I grew up in between 2 small cities in Mississippi which are Batesville and Oxford. I tend to believe that many people have it misconstrued regarding small places. I witnessed two street organizations get the best of one another to this day. These are the places where real plugs reside to remove themselves of their elements from bigger cities and I just found myself within the eye of the storm at times. Music was my release after repeatedly being kicked off of athletic teams in high school. In alternative school, I can only imagine how many music journals I went through. It’s funny though, I never wanted to rap about crime or drugs or gang violence etc. due to me believing that it could indict ones close to me or even myself so you’ll hear in many of my songs that I can take it ‘THERE’ on some conscious type material but not too overboard lol.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
The biggest thing is to MAKE SURE you get names and numbers while doing small gigs. This generates an automatic fan club regarding the local scene of club owners and organic fans. 300 real fans beats 3,000 digital fans any day of the week. Also, don’t be afraid of small venues with big budgets like frat houses or even junior college crowds.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Of course! The biggest thing is to not only improv but also not let the crowd know. Transitions make people forget any error. Kill the awkwardness by breaks, asking the crowd ‘open ended’ questions etc.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
Mannnnnnn lol. I have seen some CRAZY THINGS doing small regional tours. The funniest is by far when we had a rather heavy set guy have his pants snatched down by some high school kids and he had this pinkish speedo on, when he went to bend over and pull his pants up, one of them kicked him and he just laid there laughing, it may have been planned but very hilarious. I have also had MANY strippers…nvm. Yea, things get crazy touring. BEYOND crazy.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
I’m good as of now. I run a host of daws and even have an analogue board that I run some of my final mixes through to give it a tape sound. My daws are Logic, Studio One 3, FL Studio, Reason, and Sonar Cakewalk. My mode dictates which one I use.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Digital marketing is the name of the game, but I’m also discovering that you can’t do anything without being on someone’s playlist! Therefore, I’m starting to reach for different brands and hopefully in the upcoming year, I’ll have 40% of them closed and doing work.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
As hard as this question is, it would HAVE TO BE Prince at Superbowl! Greatness…
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Yes indeed! We are ahead of schedule actually! I have Volume 2-4 of the Tide series nearly completed and it should carry through 2018. “Volume 2: High Tide” will be releasing in March or early April. After that, I will have to see how we will release the others.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
I would either be boxing or training people full time. I own a boxing gym in Oxford so, that is a definite. I have a couple of golden glove champions also.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in the next year or so?
The fans should look forward to the perpetual wave of Truth Gordon. I can only be supressed for so long. They actually should get comfortable with me, I’m here to stay.
Exposed Vocals: Any Shout-outs?
Yes. You for this interview. Much love bro.
