Any claims of internet-age rap’s “post-regionalism” only go so far when considering Detroit, a perennially underwritten city for about as long as rap’s existed, save for that one time Marshal Mathers won an Oscar. Like all the most exciting regional rap movements, Detroit’s street rap scene has been steadily bubbling over the past few years; since 2013 in particular.
The city’s been churning out criminally overlooked projects from a bunch of unsigned and independent rappers. But the city’s new wave of artists isn’t actually all that new; it is a direct continuation of the raw, late 90s and early 2000s-nodding street raps groups that helped shaped Detroit gangster rap in the era of Cash Money and No Limit’s retaliatory materialism.
So let’s talk about the realism of SHAMAZZ and his hit single ‘Cliche’
“coming for ya now the neighbors know my name” “I’m so Cliche’
Overall, this is a grueling listen, but it’s raw, pop emotion contrasts well with the
comparatively light melodic backing, and is compelling from start to finish. If the rest
of the tracks of the album this belongs to match this one, SHAMAZZ should find he
follows in the footsteps of his rap heroes and finds major success.
