“a huge amount of personality and a unique style” C-Note with “DROP IT” feat. Sic
The backing track to this song comes with a noticeably long introduction, during which it’s very easy to find yourself drifting off into deep thought. Although the sound has a lot of what you might think of as classic r&b, the music is surprisingly gentle, and the synths used throughout work really well alongside this mellow and calming, hip-hop style beat.
All together these things make for a really dreamlike piece of music. It’s easy perhaps to drift off entirely and not really focus on the melody or the lyrics much, but the chorus section definitely has some weight to it – you do notice the repetition of that hook, and following this, the rap vocal has a huge amount of personality and a unique style to it, so by this point there’s a lot more to hold on to.
Neither side of the song’s expression is better nor worse, in fact, the way it all moves between these varying feelings as you listen, the atmosphere evolving as you involve yourself in the music, it really makes for an interesting and original experience.
The overwhelming softness of the ambiance is perhaps a little too strong if the artists involved do want more attention paying to their lyrics, it’s possible to come away from the song not remembering much outside of the ‘drop it’ hook, but it’s with great reason considering it’s the enjoyable sound of the music that causes this misdirection. A little more space around the words would make a difference, but not all tracks are about the lyrical content, and rhythmically all vocal parts fit really well within the sound of the song. It would be good to hear more music of a similar nature, there’s a lot about it that is fresh and quite intriguing.
