Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
We arrived on Earth in the 60’s and were raised by loving family and friends and surrounded by the arts: instruments, singing, dancing, painting. Older cousins were listening to Jazz and the Beatles (and a lot more); parents were listening to folk and Classical music; and that was all part of the tapestry of the early days. It must be in the genes. Nature vs. Nurture. That old debate.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
As for getting airplay, if you’re good, you’ll get noticed. Just keep doing what you’re doing musically and if it’s good, you’ll be found in no time. Of course you have to lay the groundwork and plant the seeds to be found, but you’ll be found. Use the online stores (iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, others), social media (Facebook and Twitter), online videos and audio samples (YouTube, Vimeo and SoundCloud - and allow comments, people like to read comments and see what others are thinking), and unique Band websites ... You’ll get found. Of course, play live shows, if that’s what you do. Again, you’ll get found.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Mistakes or "Missed-Takes" happen to everyone. Roll with the punches and have fun! That's life!
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
The Vocal Chords do not have any tours planned at the present time. However we are doing a lot of studio recording for upcoming albums. We are releasing our second album with The Cud Chewing Cows http://www.cudchewingcows.com entitled, "Cocoa Love". It's the follow up album to last years release of "Butter Love". Both albums have thirteen songs. "Cocoa Love" includes covers from Johnny Cash, The Beatles, The Doors, The Drifters, Buddy Holly, Jim Croce, The Kingston Trio and others. Visit the "Cocoa Love" page for the complete track listing, videos and more! http://www.vocalchords.ca/cocoalove.html It'll be released on CD at CreateSpace and digitally on BandCamp. And yes, CD's still sell! It's hard to beat a CD which has better sound recording quality and an actual old-school booklet with stuff to read. So we are thrilled to keep offering this medium to our fans!
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
Our studio and equipment is worn like an old pitchers mitt and is pleasantly part of the recording sessions. Happiness prevails!
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
We contend social networking, videos and word-of-mouth are the answer.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
With the Beatles; or Paul or Ringo! Why? Really? Need you ask? All hail the King(s)! We would also love to have performed with Lambert, Hendricks and Ross! Why? Jazz vocals! The best. The originals. Singing the notes as the instruments would have played them. The precursors to Manhattan Transfer. We had the honour of meeting Jon Hendricks at the Sunfest Jazz Festival in West Palm Beach Florida many years ago.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
We have a lot in the pipeline! Sure we released "Butter Love" just last Spring. Sure, as we mentioned above, "Cocoa Love" is due out May 25th. But what's next? We have been happily, blissfully recording music with The Cud Chewing Cows and are targeting production of several new albums to be released each Spring between now and 2020. Visit http://www.vocalchords.ca for more information on each of the next three planned albums including, album names, artwork, videos and more.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
We’ve always been in the arts. Film making, Animation, Graphics, Music, Design, etc. Check out the “Mother Ship” at Space Viz: http://www.SpaceViz.com .
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in the next year or so?
Later this month we are releasing "Cocoa Love". There are plans to release albums each Spring between now and 2020. Every few weeks or months, depending on the schedule, we hope to release some Singles for our VIP Members through BandCamp. Visit our BandCamp page at https://thevocalchords.bandcamp.com
Exposed Vocals: Any Shout-outs?
We have countless Shout-Outs to so many people. Some family, friends, neighbours, strangers… who have all unwittingly offered us stuff to think about by their "off the cuff" remarks. We have heard, appreciate and love them all and thank them for their input and support along the way. And we love YOU, The Fans, from whom we get the 'drive' to Create and the ‘thrill’ to watch and hear them enjoy themselves. It's a great symbiosis. Win-Win!!
