Exposed Vocals: What does your band name mean and where did it come from?
The Lionyls is a cross between the words Lion and Vinyl. We wanted to make up a word that had some connection to music, but no apparent meaning. That allows us to create an identity for ourselves from the ground up; fill up an empty word. Every new person we meet unfailingly asks about our name, and that gives us a chance to tell them who we are, what we do, and what we stand for.
Exposed Vocals: What are you working on right now?
We recently released a music video for "Midnight Hour" that you can view here https://youtu.be/j5QGpqiz558. Right now, we're currently on a cross country tour playing shows from Ontario to Vancouver. On the road we're beginning to conceive material for our next record. We recently received a grant from the OAC (Ontario Arts Council) to fund it's creation. We're very excited to take this next step and push ourselves beyond our previous sound, style and musical ability.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
As a performer you have to be aware that mistakes will happen. As a professional we make sure to never let that stop the show. Often times, a mistake becomes something we can feed off of and joke with each other about on stage, as well as with the audience depending on how obvious the mistake was. Sometimes, a mistake will actually sound good, and cause us to think about our music from a new perspective. I think imperfections are part of what makes a live show entertaining. I don't believe the ideal performance from a listening perspective would be one where every song was note for note like the album and nothing quirky or memorable transpired. Simply because we're human, we make mistakes, we grow and we relate.
Exposed Vocals: What genre are you playing?
We call our music ROCK & SOUL, which is essentially a crossroads where all of our influences meet. At times we are very funky, sometimes we rock hard, we can be smooth and sultry, or deep in a blues groove, and everything in between - we refuse to limit ourselves to one style and that is reflected in our ROCK & SOUL name. Soaring vocals, bitchin' riffs and groovy rhythms with tight dynamics. Classic Rock, Pop, Soul, Funk, R&B, Disco, Neo Soul, Blues, and Jazz are some of our obvious influences and are ingrained within our sound.
Exposed Vocals: What are your plans for the future??
We'd like to achieve recognition internationally and share our music with listeners across the globe. As well as become the best musicians and performers we possibly can be. All the while crafting a sound that is innovative, unique, timeless and shows integrity.
Exposed Vocals: What got you involved in this in the first place?
The love of music. Whether we're successful or not, music is a force in each of our lives that we cannot ignore or escape. It chose us, so to speak.
Exposed Vocals: How do you feel about the internet in the music business?
The internet can be a real blessing for the modern musician, especially for those of us who are independent. There are plenty of platforms on which it is possible to share our message and our music. We are in control of what we post and share and that enables us to create a relationship directly with our fans. There is a sense of trust there, and they know that they are communicating directly with the source. On the flip side, other artists have access to the same platforms as we do and thus the market has become extremely saturated. While this might seem daunting, we use it as fuel to set ourselves apart, become extremely clear about our identity, and it pushes us every day to become the best musicians that we can.
Exposed Vocals: What are your musical icons/influences?
We have too many to name but a short list would be: Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Michael Jackson, Thin Lizzy, Eric Clapton, The Meters, Parliament-Funkadelic, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Earth, Wind & Fire
Exposed Vocals: Any Shout-outs?
Our family and friends who have been ultra supportive in our journey thus far, and the fans we've met and have yet to meet. We love you all! www.thelionyls.com
