Exposed Vocals just sat down to an interview with Alonzo
A Small-town boy with a voice that could move the world; passionate, determined, & fearless are just three words that describe Alonzo. Born in Chicago Illinois, raised in Rockford Illinois, Alonzo is the product of humble beginnings. It was at the age of 4 that he began to show signs he was destined to entertain. Dancing and singing for family and friends on holidays became a tradition in Alonzo’s family.
He attended an arts high school in Rockford where he started his dance training. He then went on to study dance at Columbia College in Chicago. Alonzo founded a dance crew named Fatally Unique where he was the CEO & Choreographer. Fatally Unique performed on several television shows such as BET’s 106 & Park. They also competed on NBC’s Americas Got Talent, progressing to the Semi Finals. Fatally Unique won many dance competitions around the country but he always felt like something was missing. Alonzo loved to dance but his heart was always with singing. After singing in churches, family weddings, and funerals, he had discovered the power within his voice. After years of feeling pressured to only focus on dance, Alonzo hid the fact that he wanted to be a singer. When his mom wasn’t home he would perform fake concerts in his living room as if he was performing to thousands of people.
In 2013, Alonzo saw an ad on Craigslist. The title read Singers Needed for International Tourâ€; he knew this was his chance. Two weeks later Alonzo was on a Nightclub tour across Asia. It was on this tour that people began to recognize the level of his talent. He then went on to headline four, sold out night club tours throughout Asia. This allowed him to save up enough money to move from Rockford to Los Angeles. As of today, Alonzo lives in Los Angeles where he continues to pursue his dream.
Exposed Vocals: When did you first begin singing and were you self-trained?
I’ve been singing secretly since I can remember. I say that because I hid that I could sing for many years before I actually got the courage to sing in front of people and pursue it as a career. I was definitely self-trained but while training myself I studied the greats.
Exposed Vocals: Do you play any other instruments and how do you take care of your vocals so they are always top notch?
As of this interview I don’t play any instruments. I took a piano class in high school & failed so I never tried again haha. I think I might try to learn to play piano again though.
I have several vocal remedies. They all kind of depend on my vocal needs at the time. I typically will steam every day before and after I sing (Studio, Shows, Etc). I love tea (The flavor depends on what my voice needs that day). I love licorice & when my voice is really exhausted I have some amazing throat sprays that come in handy.
Exposed Vocals: Your range is INSANE. When did you realize you could hit those HIGH notes?
Every day when my mom left for work the living room would become my arena. I’d sing really high and really loud. Sometimes id even shock myself. This is how I discovered my range. Screaming trying to imitate Patti Labelle when no one was around haha
Exposed Vocals: Favorite artists?
I have so many. I kind of keep them separated in 2 groups. Legends or people that remind me of legends. I’d say my favorite legends are Tina Turner, Patti Labelle, & Michael Jackson. My favorite younger artists would be Joss Stone, Jessie J, & Fantasia. Lastly, anyone that knows me knows I am CRAZY about Beyoncé. My love for her is beyond the music. She is the artist that I think about when im about to give up.
Exposed Vocals: ow does it feel to be releasing your first original music?
I won’t lie I’m scared out of my mind. I think the cool thing now is that I am no longer allowing fear to stop it from happening or hold me back. Im really excited for the unknown and what the future holds. I’ve sang covers of other peoples music for years and it’s so fulfilling to have something that I can call my own.
Exposed Vocals: Tell us about your upcoming performances…
Not sure when this interview will be published but unless im on tour I’m usually at The Viper Room in LA twice a month and at The Sayers Club in Hollywood every Thursday. I will also be doing a very intimate show at Nitelight on June 13, 2019. All in all everyone please follow me on Instagram
